When he’s not relishing the ban of “scumbag” cheaters in PlanetSide 2, SOE CEO John Smedley is teasing new weapons for the recently launched MMOFPS. According to tweets from the man himself, “new sniper and carbines” will be introduced in the game “tomorrow,” December 6. The following week, players can expect “new anti-vehicle weapon,” including “anti-air you rocket pod haters.” Smedley promised the everything will be “balanced” for those who tend to worry about such things.

Planetside 2 is very likely the only shooter of its class, in terms of scale, ambition, and technical prowess. Sony Online Entertainment doesn’t mind reminding you of this, either; the following trailer asks whether your favourite FPS can match it.

Planetside 2′s cert gain rates and costs for unlocks have been adjusted, and the time investment for weapons has been reduced by 30% on top end weapon unlock, according to SOE. The adjustments will allow players to earn points two times as fast as the current build, but cert prices on abilities and attachments will be doubled in order to even out the changes. Weapon certs will remain as is, it will take players less time to unlock new items with some weapons even being cut by half. When the game launches on November 20, players will notice the various costs schematic, which will come in five different categories. That should make things easier to discern. Head over to RPS and the Planetside 2 forums for a more thorough explanation.

Planetside 2′s beta servers went offline briefly earlier today while Sony Online Entertainment corrected an issue which crept in with the last patch: missing certs (the MMO’s currency). SoE boss John Smedley said that users should not be seeing any more cert issues, and that only a very small number of players were affected. A hotfix to address crash problems was issued bare hours later. Planetside 2 is in closed beta and is expected to launch on November 20.

Rather than the usual slew of contrived development snippets, Sony Online Entertainment has launched a campaign to market Planetside 2 by showing real players doing their thing. The result is quite effective; check out the now-famous Black Widow Company fighting the good fight, and round up your guildies to submit your own video.

It’s a good day to be an antipodean MMOFPS fan; the long promised Australian Planetside 2 servers are live. Sony Online Entertainment boss John Smedley announced the opening on Twitter, and games.on.net reports local players have already reported a noticeable decrease in lag. No more blowing up the tanks in front of you by driving over them then – well, not and being able to blame anything but your lack of skill.

Ex-38 Studios staffer Steve Danuser has rejoined Sony Online Entertainment. Danuser was part of the Everquest fold before jumping ship to become lead developer on Project Copernicus, the ill-fated MMO based on the Kingdoms of Amalur IP. Happily, SOE seems pleased to have Danuser back following 38 Studios’ closure, as he’s now taken on the role of creative director of Vanguard; read a little about his philosophy and approach to MMOs in a developer profile on Vanguard’s site.
