Three new classes for EverQuest Next have been announced: the Beast Lord, Cleric and Necromancer. This bring the class total to eight when you include: Blademaster, Rogue, Tempest, Warrior and Wizard. In all there will be 40 classes. The news was announced as part of a feature in the latest issue of PC Gamer, which details each of the three aforementioned newcomers along with the Tempest. EQN will be free-to-play and ties into EverQuest Next Landmark. Neither have been dated. Thanks, Massively.

PlanetSide 2 One-Year Anniversary bundle announced, players’ stories to be featured in graphic novel
PlanetSide 2 is turning a year old, and to celebrate, ProSiebenSat.1 Games and SOE are teaming up to offer players the opportunity to share their in-game shenanigans which could become part of a future graphic novel.

EverQuest Next Landmark was shown off during an SOE livestream on Twitch a few days ago, and if you missed out on it like I did, you can rewatch it below. In it, director of development Dave Georgeson, community manager Colette Murphy, and senior producer Terry Michaels chat about the Landmark Founder’s Packs and show off the building tools as associate producer Eric Smith constructs a castle live in-game. The free-to-play title ties into EverQuest Next and neither have been dated.

The promised Performance Update 01 for PlanetSide 2 has been released. According to the patch notes, the game has been “refactored”in order to utilize multiple CPU cores and the same has been a done for UI rendering. The team has also added adaptive complexity levels for physics simulations based on current client performance; optimized the CPU cost of some purely aesthetic physics objects; disabled redundant physics processing between remotely-simulated vehicles; and many other performace tweaks and changes. EverQuest Next Landmark will be handled by Sony Online Entertainment in all regions, which mean those in Europe will not have to go through Prosiebensat.1 to play the game or its beta. Here’s the quote: “We are delivering an entirely new and unique approach to MMO game design and development with EverQuest Next Landmark, and given that SOE’s Player Studio program is one of the cornerstones of EverQuest Next Landmark, SOE will directly manage EQNL and Player Studio for all regions.” Beta sign ups for Landmark are through here.

Magic: The Gathering – Tactics will be taken offline in March, SOE and Wizards of the Coast have announced. New game accounts can no longer be created and all code for the title will be retained by Sony Online Entertainment, which has no plans to license or authorize an emulator of the game by fans. All websites and forums associated the game will be shuttered, and players which have an existing deck inventory prior to November 18 will be able to access the cards until the service shuts down on March 28. EverQuest Landmark pre-alpha shots of a keep built using the game’s voxel tools have been posted by the game’s director of development David Georgeson on Twitter. The free-to-play title ties into EverQuest Next and the games will share the same combat system mechanics and emergent AI system -only the latter may not be used in the same manner in Landmark. Dragon’s Prophet is hosting a double XP weekend, so if you haven’t logged in for a while, now’s the time to do it. Along with the extra experience points through Sunday, SOE has word it will be holding a Frontier System press event on Monday, October 7 with the top three alliances on the scoreboard receiving Death Knell dragons. This week, EverQuest 2 released an update allowing the creation of “Heroic Characters” that starts at level 85, a boon considering EverQuest is notoriously longwinded. And until October 15, select players can have a free Heroic character (will cost $35 after the promotion) and also enjoy the benefits of the paid gold-level membership without paying for it.

EverQuest Next Landmark director Dave Georgeson has said the combat system in the game will contain the same mechanics as EverQuest Next. Speaking in an interview with Forbes, Georgeson said both will also share the emergent AI system built into EQ Next, only it may not be used in the same manner in Landmark. “EverQuest Next is more of a focused narrative with story arcs and rallying calls, [and] emergent AI pushing things around,” he said. “Landmark is very much an exploration in creativity and making things that are cool to show off to other players.”

PlanetSide 2 will be undergoing optimization in various ways, according to SOE, and to give you more of an idea of what is planned, the firm has released a video featuring the developers discussing some of the changes. One of the optimizations coming to the game includes better framerates and this will be accomplished by reducing some of the visual effects which cause the game to run slower than it should. There are other optimization plans in the works, which SOE outlined in an open letter to players a couple of weeks ago. For now, though, watch the first in the new series of development videos below.
