CCP CEO Hilmar Pétursson and David Reid, incumbent chief of marketing operations, have reassuringly said that despite recent shake-ups within the firm, it is still committed to making the MMO World of Darkness, and the duo promised it will be “much more accessible than the EVE universe” for those who are not into science fiction.

Speaking with Ten Ton Hammer, Pétursson said the developer’s vision for World of Darkness is to take the experience CCP holds, and combine it with “all the history and refinement” of Vampire: The Masquerade in the last two decades and turn it into something “the world has never seen before.”

“People [need to] understand that it’s not so much that CCP is shipping a new game this year, it’s more that CCP is dramatically expanding the EVE universe this year, and we think of World of Darkness as that second universe,” added Reid.

“Taking the tech, the human intelligence, methodology, and experience that we’ve got, and building that second universe with a very different flavor of moment-to-moment gameplay [makes] World of Darkness less of a new platform and more of a new universe.”

“When they see what we’re able to do with that new universe and that intellectual property… well, it’s a really big opportunity. There is no shortage of commitment here to making World of Darkness awesome.”

Pétursson said the sixty-person team working on the MMO is making “fantastic progress,” and Reid added that the team is making sure it is a “trans formative” experience for players.

“Despite what you hear from us about DUST and EVE, there are more people working on World of Darkness here at CCP than there are working on triple A titles at other companies I’ve worked at for the stage of development it’s at,” he said. “Everyone here realizes what a tremendous opportunity we have.

“To do what’s been done here with EVE – the economy, the persistence, the Machiavellian politics that players do to construct their own content – imagine what that can be like in a modern era intellectual property, in something everyone understands. We don’t all know how to pilot a spaceship, but we all know how to kill a vampire. And that’s the case even if we haven’t played Vampire: The Masquerade.”

World of Darkness has been development since 2008 and doesn’t have a release window, currently, but is expected sometime this year “at the earliest.”

CCP isn’t worried about the possibility of a new hardware cycle – it’ll just adapt its PlayStation 3 exclusive DUST 514 to new tech.

“If there is a PlayStation 4 – which I can tell you now I have no idea if there is – but if there was, we would build Dust for that console as well,” CEO Hilmar Pétursson told Develop.

“It will most likely be a revision of the experience, as with all updates, and could allow people to play across PS3 and 4.”

Pétursson compared the possibility of a new console to the constant upgrading of PC technology.

“We have been faced with technology upgrade challenges for years,” he explained.

“We release new versions of EVE at a time when most people don’t have the technology to support it, so we operate both the old and new versions of EVE on the same client and allow people to migrate.

“We will continue to develop on PlayStation 3 even after the release of Dust, and I think the game’s audience is more used to constant updates than people may assume. I mean, if you look at Call of Duty, that essentially is an online experience that has undergone mass migration across three games.”

DUST 514 , a shooter with direct, two-way ties to EVE Online, is currently in closed beta, and expected in northern spring. Players take on the role of ground troop mercenaries, and negotiate contracts for EVE Online players. Those who perform well can earn their way out of paying the game’s subscription – just as in EVE Online.

In a new EVE Insider post, CCP Soundwave revealed that Team Best Friends Forever and Team Pink Zombie Kittens had been disbanded due to an influx of members resulting in groups too large to manage effectively.

Three teams were formed from the developers, rejoining in the appellations of Team Super Friends, Team Game of Drones and Team Five 0.

This news served as an appetiser to a lengthy list of proposed changes, expected in a January 24 patch. Some of the highlights include rebalances to assault ships and null ammo; buffs to Crucible modules (CCP invites you to whine about how overpowered they are); and shift-click to overheat, a small but important change indeed.

Hit the link above for the full patch list.

EVE Online’s player advocate group, the Council of Stellar Management, has released the minutes of its December meeting with CCP, revealing a number of interesting snippets about the MMOs ongoing development and management.

During the meeting, CCP stressed that one of its priorities is to deliver content appropriate to varying degrees of experience, so that new players right through to eight-year veterans have a good time.

Speaking of eight-year veterans, the developer also noted that the game’s ageing systems need thorough overhaul rather than constant bandaging. To that end, a “live” engineering group will be set up, working independently of game development, to keep the game running, freeing other teams to work on more robust solutions.

Another new team was also introduced – a security force to help combat cheats and hackers. A new group called the Eve Security Task Force will offer advice and recommendations to the security team.

While on the subject of personnel, Unifex has been appointed senior producer, after a stint as director of the Core group. Former incumbent Zulu has moved into another role.

Other important discussions during the three day meeting include proposed changes to the election process of the CSM; a planned loyalty program to reward veterans; and the ongoing effects of PLEX (subscription units purchasable with real money or in-game currency) on the economy.

If you’d like to read over the meeting’s minutes in detail, you can download a PDF directly here.

World of Darkness producer Chris McDonough has said Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines is a major influence on CCP’s upcoming MMO.

McDonough was speaking to World of Darkness News in a video interview.

The producer also said that pen and paper RPGs are natural material for MMOs, as they highlight player characters, not specific heroes. Because of this, CCP plans to focus on interaction between players, since there is no games master to tailor the experience.

McDonough confirmed CCP still has a full development team on board the game, despite the company’s admission that the project bas been pushed slightly onto the back burner.

The MMO’s story will delve into the politics and backstabbing that goes on between rival vampire clans, and CCPO chose to highlight just one supernatural race so as to be able to provide more depth at launch; the latest World of Darkness role paying scenario also provides primary source material for werewolves and mages, as well as changelings, alchemically altered monsters, hunters and geists. Prior to the canon’s reboot, it had rules for ghosts, mummies, and demons as well.

EVE Online senior producer Arnar “CCP Zulu” Gylfason has announced he is stepping down in order to implement a “better and more efficient organization”.

According to his official blog post on the matter, the last 18 months were an “incredibly intense time” with “quite a few harsh lessons” for the firm and his position will now be filled by Jon “CCP Unifex” Lander, who has been lead on CCP’s Carbon technology team since 2009.

Lander also noted in a blog post that the development team, which currently employs close to 200 people, will be “concentrating” mainly on features already “in the game after eight years of development,” for the near future.

Lander also noted that CCP will be launching “each and every one of our subscribers who have a paying EVE account as of 23:59 GMT on December 31, 2011… into space.” Basically, all character names and images of subs “will be placed in an expertly crafted EVE Pod during Fanfest 2012, … affixed to a high-altitude balloon during the event and released to altitudes exceeding 100,000 feet and into the realm of near space.

A camera will record the voyage of all EVE capsuleers as they crest the curve of the planet.

Thanks, Massively.

CCP has released another update on the PS Blog pertaining to DUST 514, and it focuses on the game’s infantry weapons where as previous entries provided information on the shooter’s Rapid Deployment Vehicles.

According to the post, weapons will be broken down into categories: light, heavy, and sidearm. Those in the light class will be the primary offensive weapons used by players, and can be used for short and mid-ranged fire, and each will come in four variants: standard, breach, tactical and specialist. The Gallente G75-VLB Plasma Assault Rifle was used as one example, that will allows the player to select the style best-suited to them with a variety of benefits and trade-offs.

Heavy weapons, on the other hand, can only be wielded by those skilled enough to use heavy dropsuits, due to the high amount of dropsuit power grid and CPU systems. This would make using heavy weapons “unsuitable if you favor a more generalist approach” to weapons and equipment load outs; however, in the “right hands” they can be devastating to the enemy. CCP used the DCMA S-1 Forge Gun as an example, which is a Caldari-built anti-material weapon used to engage and destroy hostile Heavy Attack Vehicles.

Lastly, side arms will also be available, and players will use these more as a backup weapon in frontline assaults for a close range combat solution. These will be especially important for those in highly specialized roles such as those using a Forge Gun. The side arm shown was the CAR-9 Scrambler pistol, an Amarr weapon which is low on ammunition count, but extremely high on power. Accurate shots with the CAR-9 will “tear through shields and armor,” and it’s going to be extremely effective when making head shots due to its high damage output.

Shots of each weapon, and more information on each weapon class can be found through the US PS Blog.

DUST 514 is slated for a summer 2012 release with a beta confirmed, but a release still to be determined.

EVE Online’s disastrously unpopular expansion Incarna failed because it didn’t address the needs of current players, the company believes.

“We didn’t really do any gameplay around it, it was just ‘here are some characters, you can walk around’ and that’s it. That’s all you can do, you can walk around inside a small room,” senior producer Arnar Hrafn Gylfason told PC Gamer.

“Sure it’s a good step to being able to be a person and being able to see your person, but it’s a more important step for that person to be able to do something rather than just walk around. And I think that’s where we ultimately failed.”

Part of Incarna’s problem, Gylafson admitted, is that it was motivated by the game’s notoriously unfriendly beginner experience.

“Being a spaceship isn’t appealing to a lot of people. People want to be a person, someone they can identify with and get into character with,” he said.

Incarna was to change that, by introducing features “that the core community weren’t really excited for but had potential new markets”.

This proved to be a mistake.

“In the months leading up to Incarna, we failed to properly acknowledge the sentiment of the community and I think that’s a lesson we’ve learned extremely hard. Hopefully a mistake we’re never going to make again,” the producer added.

CCP launched a new expansion for the game last week. Crucible offers a number of new ships and other much-requested core features.

“A thing we’ve been systematically working on is adding types of cases that go directly into the stack queue, which is our highest priority queue,” a CCP representative said.

“We always aim at cases in the stack queue being answered within the hour, but typically the time is usually closer to 15 minutes or so.”

Originally reserved for the highest priority problems – broken missions and harassment cases – the stack queue has been extended to other kinds of requests, meaning players are likely to have their issues rectified promptly.

Watch the full developer diary below for more insight into how customer support works (and trains), plus CCP’s ongoing server upgrades and the battle against downtime.

EVE’s server architect, Lin Luo has said the team is working hard to make sure the servers being “hosted around the globe” for DUST 514 are fully optimized and ready for anything players can throw at them.

In a post over the PS Blog, Luo explained the tech behind the servers and how various scenarios, as far as load and utilizing the game’s speedy, FPS dynamics would be handled.

“Unlike normal FPS multiplayer games, DUST 514 has heavy MMO elements,” he said. “And unlike normal MMO FPS games, DUST has heavy interaction with EVE Online. This imposes challenges on what technologies we should use in order to have this level of interaction with EVE, while keeping FPS gameplay as smooth as possible.

“While continuing to rely on the Unreal 3 engine for the FPS multiplayer gameplay for DUST, the interaction with the rest of the EVE universe should naturally take advantage of utilizing some existing EVE online technologies.”

Luo explained that the technology will make use of clusters when the number of each team battling it out has reached a pre-determined minimum. The EVE server logic will “instruct an appropriate DUST battle cluster to spawn a battle in it,” providing the server with “all the necessary information regarding the prospective battle upon launching.”

After a battle is over, the server process will be terminated by the EVE universe.

“So the EVE universe needs to manage the lifetime of DUST battle servers as well as communicating with them when needed, while we also need to make sure that the latency sensitive FPS multiplayer gameplay goes fairly for the participating DUST players,” said Luo. “I won’t go into a deep technical discussion about how we solve the challenges involved here, as we are still exploring all the possibilities to find out the best balance point to map physical DUST battles nicely into the EVE universe.”

Since the centralized server hardware resources will be limited in number, the team will utilize existing server resources as much as possible, so instead of having a “dedicated server machine to host one battle, we aim to have a dedicated multi-core server machine to host as many DUST battle servers as possible,” he said.

CCP has been conducting numerous performance optimizations on both the server and client sides in order to make sure the battles will be “very scalable.”

DUST 514 is slated for a summer release with a beta confirmed, but a release still to be determined.

CCP CEO Hilmar Petursson has said the firm lost a connection with its community when earlier this year it “forced [changes] upon” EVE Online players and removed features the fanbase “cared a lot about.”

Speaking in an interview with Gamasutra, Petursson said that as the developer looked more towards its own goals, it found that both “people inside CCP and inside the community” called them out on such “a great mistake.”

“One of our strengths has been to collaborate with the community on the development of EVE… but I have to admit… that we have lost that connection in our ambitions to push on these three agendas [EVE, Dust 514, World of Darkness] at the same time,” he said. “The experience we’ve now gone through is getting back to the CCP which was much more focused on that, and that is what we hope to demonstrate now going forward.

“I’d say [working with the community] is in our DNA,” he said. “I would call this more about going back to our roots, behaving like the company that people have come to love and respect, frankly.”

Petursson admitted that at first, the firm felt the initial backlash was nothing more than “just some noise in the channel,” but found enough that it was, in fact, “something that was really emotionally important, and something that people are really connected with in EVE Online.”

The community’s whisper to a scream tactic worked, though, and prompted Petursson to write his letter to the community, and it also prompted the firm to refocus its efforts on EVE and DUST 514, with a less emphasis on its MMO World of Darkness.

The firm is also looking to draw more players into the EVE universe by offering new accounts free cerebral accelerator implants, which “significantly increase a new pilot’s skill development,” for 35 days. A rare Apotheosis frigate is also on offer for players who invites friend to join the game, who then upgrade to a paid account.

EVE’s Power of 2 special is also back from now until November 28, and existing players get 180 days of free game time with an alt character account or three PLEX, for $49.95. The new account will receive a cerebral accelerator as well. (Thanks, Massively.)

Speaking to Develop, CCP’s VP of business development Thor Gunnarsson has claimed Dust 514 will expand the horizons of the PS3 and that this can only be a good thing, “It would be a risk not to make Dust. It would be a risk to think that everything will work if we sit still,” he said.

CCP, developer of upcoming PS3-exclusive FPS Dust 514, is optimistic that the nature of game’s integration with MMO title Eve Online will help open up the traditionally closed console infrastructure.

“The console space right now is where the PC was before the internet really kicked off,” Gunnarson stated. “Console is about to leap forward and it won’t look back.”

The crux of Gunnerson’s claims revolves around the way in which the events of Dust 514 on Sony’s console will take place on a planet that exists in real-time inside the world of PC MMO Eve Online. Players of each title will be able to affect the world of the other, be it for better or worse.

“That will iterate over time,” Gunnerson said. “But the objective is to make Dust 514 be significant to the world of Eve and vice-versa. So Dust players can call in air support or munitions from Eve players.”

Dust 514 is expected for PS3 next year and will have yet to be detailed PS Vita-supported features.

CCP has admitted that designing a game that’s revolving around a subscription is more or less “flawed” when going up against F2P.

EVE Online lead designer Kristoffer Touborg admitted to GameSpot he “definitely” saw a shift away from sub-based games in future.

“It’s definitely going away, and we’re seeing big titles, like Modern Warfare 3 and others, looking like they will be heavily microtransaction-based,” said Touborg at GDC Online.

“I would say it’s the way of the future, but these kinds of things also tend to come and go. It’s a current trend, and it will be for a while. I think designing a new subscription-based game is a flawed strategy, because you are basically competing with free.”

He went on to add that a switch to F2P from subs-based for EVE Online, currently at 400,000 subs, isn’t needed anytime soon, saying there wasn’t quite a need to “turn that bucket upside down.”

CCP’s working on free-to-play, transaction-based shooter Dust 514 for a 2012 release on PS3.

CCP has completely thrown out the content it had planned for upcoming EVE Online updates, and gone back to a spaceship-shaped drawing board.

“Our customers didn’t like the direction we took, so we sat down and said ‘Let’s go another way.’ We had a lot of people dedicated to Incarna and virtual goods, and we sat down with them and said, ‘We’re going back to spaceships.’ And that’s pretty much it,” lead game designer Kristoffer Touborg PC Gamer.

“The winter expansion that’s coming… we’ve been effectively working on it for a few weeks. Not a few months. We threw away all the stuff we’d planned and just said, ‘Let’s make a list of what our customers like and make it.’”

Touborg said the shift back to spaceship content is “definitely not a temporary re-focusing” as a sop to angered fans, but an admission that the Incarna content is a dead end.

“It’s definitely not a temporary re-focusing. If I were to give an example – and I’m just making up the numbers here – we imagine that 80 percent of the guys working on EVE were working on Incarna and 20 percent were on flying in space, we swapped that around. The large majority of people are working on flying in space, and there’s no real plan to change that, he said.

As for why CCP took off in a direction which proved so unpopular with players, Touborg said the company wanted to bring “lifetime” to Eve, because eventually, CCP will run out of spaceship content and endgame offerings.

“You have to move on and try something new. For us, last year we said ‘What’s the biggest change? What’s the new direction we can take this game in?’ So we had the flying in space part, but we wanted to see if we could build other parts onto it,” he explained.

“Avatar and virtual goods were the things we wanted to branch out into. Virtual goods and character customization are just becoming very standard parts of gaming. And we thought that they’d kind of enrich the environment.

And I think they could. The problem was that we were doing it for the first time, and it just didn’t go as it well as it did for some companies who’ve been at this for years. We didn’t have the experience to do it properly. We screwed that up a bit, but we just see so many games where people react positively to being able to customize their character. We thought it’d be a natural fit for the Incarna expansion.

“You know, there are some people who said, ‘We’ll be quiet and trust you guys and give you whatever time you need to make Incarna good when it comes out.’ And it wasn’t. So there aren’t any illusions at CCP that we’ve been delivering what we want to,” he concluded.

CCP has offered discounted subscriptions to players who left EVE Online en masse in protest of content introduced with Incarna, and cut its workforce by 20 percent following serious losses.

CCP has announced it’s to layoff approximately 20 percent of its staff, with most redundancies occurring in the firm’s Atlanta, Georgia offices, with select positions at the firm’s Reykjavik, Iceland studio also affected.

According to the official announcement, development on the EVE Online expansions, DUST 514, and its World of Darkness MMO have had overreaching effects on the company’s resources.

CCP’s plans are to “sharpen,” its focus on EVE Online and DUST 514, and continue development on World of Darkness with a “significantly reduced team.”

“As we reexamine our outward relations, we are also taking time to reevaluate our internal goals,” read the announcement. “In doing so, we have come to the conclusion that we are attempting too many things for a company our size. Developing EVE expansions, DUST 514 and World of Darkness has stretched our resources too thin.

“Rather than allowing this to persist, we have made the decision to sharpen our focus. Sadly, this means reducing our staff. We estimate that around twenty percent of global positions will be affected by this process. These will be predominantly in our Atlanta, GA office, although select positions in our Reykjavik, Iceland office will be affected.

“We are very sad to lose some of our talented and dedicated colleagues to this necessary process. Naturally we are making every effort within our means to help them find alternative employment. Decisions like these are difficult for all those involved and extraordinarily sad for all of those whose lives are affected.”

CCP went on to state the layoffs had nothing to due with any decrease in player numbers for EVE Online, as the game is in “good health,” and subscriber numbers are “higher today than they were a year ago.”

The game has continued to grow year-on-year since its launch in 2003, despite a recent decline in player numbers over the last two months from summer’s peak numbers.

The firm attributed the slight decline in the player-base to its “own mistakes,” and “poor communications” with the community, and said it’s correcting these issues now.

Massively reports players who let their accounts lapse during a period of drama over the past few months have received emails extending them a special return offer – $4.95 US for 30 days subscription.

CCP’s introduction of startlingly expensive vanity items along with more significant gameplay additions proved so unpopular that the game’s enormous and fragile economy was undermined by departing players.

The community sent a delegation to negotiate with the developer, eventually resulting in a full formal apology from CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson.

CCP is set to release a tie-in MMO shooter, DUST 514, on PlayStation 3. The two games will sport significant cross-platform interaction.

CCP has finally given us an idea of what EVE Online’s console cousin DUST 514 actually is – and thrown a bit of boasting in there, too.

“It is the deepest shooter with the richest universe ever conceived,” executive producer Brandon Laurino told the US PS Blog when asked about DUST 514 – but the braggin’ didn’t stop there.

“There have been attempts to bring MMO games to consoles in the past but we believe we’re now in a position to do it properly, using existing features on PS3 and the PlayStation Network, and collaboratively developing new features to support our vision.

“We’re breaking so much ground with DUST 514: we’re not only building a full console MMO; we’re building one that feeds into another MMO on a completely different platform [PC]. We’re breaking more ground by bringing the microtransaction business model to a console shooter for the first time. All of this was inconceivable not too long ago.”

Having established his dominance, Laurino gave a better description of how the game interacts with its space-faring relative, EVE Online. Both games share a single shard server, literally interacting inside the same universe.

“With a huge variety of dynamics and interdependencies within the ecosystem of the sandbox we’ve created – people playing DUST 514 and people playing EVE Online are essentially providing user generated content for each other, just by their sheer presence and their actions in the game world,” he explained.

“To give an example, for a player fighting on a planet surfaces in DUST 514, the actions of the EVE Online players can trigger epic moments and provide support that is completely user-driven. Similarly, a DUST 514 player could trigger an event from the ground and do something spectacular in EVE Online.”

The game plays out in two way, as “a vehicular combat game on an extremely large scale” and a typical squad shooter.

“Typically, you would use vehicles to traverse the landscape and engage in closer combat when you deploy into outposts, but there is a huge amount of tactical freedom, way outside of those broad examples,” Laurino said,

While players will have access to some typical shooter tropes like clases, the EVE ONline paradigm means characters can be customised with anyu and all equipment, allowing for unique play styles.

No release date for the PlayStation 3 exclusive or beta has been set, but CCP alreayd have plans in place. To avoid the problem of hundreds of DUST 514 players suddenly unbalancing EVE Online, the beta will introduce small numbers of players at once, to live test the system’s integration.

“We’re not calling it a Beta, but Private Trials,” Laurino said, “In both the real world and the EVE fiction – we’re not taking the usual ‘on off’ method of rolling out a build and then taking it back and tweaking it, then rolling it out again.

“When we roll out with those first few users we are introducing mercenary technology to EVE, our “’ame as a service begins’, and the story will continue from there as that technology develops, further empowering the DUST 514 mercenaries from test subjects in war games to ultimately allowing them to take hold of their own future. It’s what we call a thematic rollout.”

Thanks, RipTen.

CCP Games CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson has issued a formal letter of apology to EVE Online fans over the hoopla surrounding the game in recent months, and claiming full responsibility for any feelings of “estrangement” fans may have had.

His open letter, which covers everything from the loss of ship spinning and not enough Captains Quarters to plans for future releases, was followed up by a developer blog citing some of the changes coming to the MMO this winter.

Here’s and excerpt from Pétursson’s letter:

“The past few months have been very humbling for me. I’ve done much soul searching, and what follows is my sincere effort to clear the air with all of you. Please bear with me as I find my way through.

The estrangement from CCP that many of you have been feeling of late is my fault, and for that I am truly sorry. There are many contributing factors, but in the end it is I who must shoulder the responsibility for much of what has happened. In short, my zeal for pushing EVE to her true potential made me lose sight of doing the simple things right. I was impatient when I should have been cautious, defiant when I should have been conciliatory and arrogant when I should have been humble.

This soul searching took me back to when EVE was just an idea. Bringing her to life in 2003 was, in many people’s minds, impossible. But we found a way because EVE is something unique in the world. Getting her to 100,000 subscribers was an even more fantastical feat. Before long, we were launching in China, making DUST 514, merging with White Wolf to build World of Darkness, building Carbon, growing the company to 600 people, increasing our subscriber count beyond that of the population of Iceland and on and on, one resounding success after the next despite earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and even a world economic collapse.

Somewhere along the way, I began taking success for granted. As hubris set in, I became less inclined to listen to pleas for caution. Red flags raised by very smart people both at CCP and in the community went unheeded because of my stubborn refusal to allow adversity to gain purchase on our plans. Mistakes, even when they were acknowledged, often went unanalyzed, leaving the door open for them to be repeated.

You have spoken, loudly and clearly, with your words and with your actions. And there were definitely moments in recent history when I wish I would have listened more and taken a different path.

I was wrong and I admit it.”

The dev blog, which you can look over here, mentions that some of the things players were upset about, such as the aforementioned ship spinning, arecoming back and more Captains Quarters are in the works as well.

Arnar Hrafn Gylfason, CCP’s senior producer of EVE Online, has posted a brief, but important notice on the official site, which states that changes are coming to the MMO and these changes have a fan requested focus.

According to Gylfason, over “the past days and weeks,” the firm has been conducting “extensive and intense introspection and revitalization.”

What happened during this look through the proverbial microscope, is the firm has decided to refocus and reprioritize on a “scale unheard of,” within the company.

“These are indeed defining times,” he wrote. “We have decided, to focus our collective efforts on the areas you have asked us to focus on.

“We will reveal more over the coming weeks. As certain details are prone to change, we want to make sure we have absolutely concrete information to give you. You’ve often told us that we promise too much and deliver too little, and this time we want to be certain that doesn’t happen. We are listening to you, we have heard you, and plans are already in motion.”

Gylfason said some of what to expect can be gleaned from Torfi Frans’ most recent developer blog, which discusses a few fixes in the works such as ship spinning, reverting turret icons to use the original custom drawn icons, and more.

If you play EVE Online, you should read up on what both men had to say through the links.

Massively has gotten out the white gloves, the over-sized magnifying glass and the funny tweed hat, all set to dig through the details that have appeared after the event.

As they rush to remind us, the game is still in pre-production, but all signs on this Magic 8 Ball are suggesting that this could well be the best vampire MMO to date. Admittedly, it’s not a terribly crowded genre, but CCP and White Wolf are definitely working on something special.

Starting out as a mortal human, it’s your choice to become a kindred (vampire), or remain mortal for your character’s life – and remember, permadeath is a very real risk in World of Darkness.

“The entire game will take place at night and on one server,” says Massively, warning gamers that this is not one for the faint-hearted. “Nudity, gore, and insanity effects are all par for the course.”

The game is packed with dynamic events, intertwined plots and metaplots, and it’s been created to emulate live-action role-playing, rather than the other way around. Other tasty snippets can be found at the regularly-updated World of Darkness News, and in a couple of threads on the game’s official forums.

We’ve still seen no steady release date for World of Darkness – “2012 at the earliest,” says publisher CCP – but if you’re into blood-sucking freaks, this could be one worth waiting for.

EVE Online developers CCP have announced that they’ll be making their in-game subscription time available at a big discount for the first time, which is kind of significant if you play EVE.

It’s significant because EVE’s subscription time is also an in-game currency that can be bought or traded with other currencies or goods. It’s a practice that CCP actually encourages.

Players can become so wealthy in-game that they don’t ever have to actually pay for the game itself. Other players can buy subscription time with real world cash and then trade that for money, goods, and influence in the game world.

For those of you who actually know what this means, on September 16, 13 PLEX (the subscription time) will cost you just $199.99. This could potentially yield significant results for EVE players as it will be a renewed chance for real-world wealth to tip the scales in the political war that is EVE Online.
