Nolan Bushnell: Mobile gaming on the way out

Missile Command record broken after 31 years
This weekend, Swedish gamer Victor Sandberg set out to take the Missile Command record, set in 1982 by Victor Ali with a score of 80.5 million. The determined arcade fan livestreamed his attempt, which lasted over 56 hours, and eventually took the crown by bowing out with 81,796,035 points. You can watch a recording the stream, or just check out this clip of the record being surpassed, and Sandberg’s eventual game over. The original Missile Command was released in 1980 via Atari and Sega.

Jace Hall, founder and ex-CEO of Monolith, has posted on Blood fansite The Post Mortem that Atari has declined his offer of developing an enhanced version of Blood for PC and other platforms.

Atari awaiting approval on bankruptcy financing
Atari has sourced $5 million in debtor-in-possession financing from Perella Weinberg Partners, which would allow it to operate through bankruptcy, Polygon reports. Perella plans to assist Atari in selling off its assets, but this role and its offer of finance must be approved by a court. Atari is apparently already in possession of $2 million and would receive the remaining $3 million if approved. Atari filed for bankruptcy late last month.

World’s largest game of Pong celebrates anniversary
Pong, often considered the first real commercial video game, turns 40 on November 29. To celebrate, Atari took part in the annual City Lights festival in Kansas City on Friday, building an enormous version of the stripped-back tennis sim which had been nominated for a Guinness World Record for World’s Largest Game of Pong. Atari turns 40 on June 27; gloss over the great crash and remind yourself the company was responsible for making video games a thing people understood, paving the way for the NES and, you know, our entire industry. Olivier Rameil to head up Atari’s mobile and online games division
Atari has appointed former Gameloft executive Olivier Rameil as European sales and marketing director. In his new position, Ramiel will head up the firm’s mobile and online games division which oversees the firm’s XBL offerings in the region. “Atari’s shift in strategy to mobile gaming represents an incredible opportunity to bring great new games based on some legendary intellectual properties to a contemporary audience,” said Rameil. “The company has already achieved demonstrated success in the US mobile market with Atari’s Greatest Hits, Breakout: Boost and Asteroids: Gunner, and I look forward to expanding upon this success in the EMEA market.” Atari announced earlier this month it was reaffirming its commitment to the mobile space, stating with putting Unlimited 2 developer Eden Games up for sale. Atari mobile games exceed 10 million downloads
Atari has announced its library of mobile games has exceeding 10 million downloads across iOS and Android smartphone and tablet devices in less than a year. The milestone comes on the 40th anniversary of Atari and Pong, for which a $100,000 Pong Indie Developer Challenge contest is currently under way. Consisting of cash prizes and publishing agreements for the top 10 finalists, developers tasked with reimagining Pong for iOS devices. The top 20 semi-finalists were recently announced on May 1 and selected from nearly 90 total submissions, all moving on to compete for a spot on the finalist rankings for June 19th.
