Glu Mobile has laid-off around 68 staff members

glu logo

Mobile publisher Glu Mobile has laid-off around 68 staff members as it moves to a games-as-a-service business model. Those affected include Griptonite Games in Kirkland, San Francisco and Beijing. Glu closed its Brazil office last year. “We believe concentrating resources on fewer titles, with a greater centralized support infrastructure will accelerate revenue growth in Q4 2013 and beyond,” CEO Niccolo de Masi told IGN. “A reduction in force was commenced today to promote talent density throughout the studio, as well as fund over 80 new [games as a service] colleagues.” Thanks GI International.

EA staff cuts hit customer service center in Galway

irish flag

EA has lad-off an undisclosed number of number staff members at its customer service center in Galway, reports Ireland’s The Journal. When asked for a statement on the matter, the firm provided the trade outlet with the same response given to the lay-offs which occurred earlier in the week in Montreal. In September of last year, EA announced it would add 300 new jobs to the 200 already present at its Galway offices, through an IDA Ireland-supported expansion. While EA would not comment on the number affected, the trade journal understands the number of cuts equate to less than 20 positions. Thanks, Sorvin.

Namco Bandai to open new Singapore, Vancouver offices

Namco Bandai Logo

Namco Bandai is expanding with two new international offices. A press release by the British Columbia Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training notes that Namco Bandai Vancouver will begin operation in june, while an unnamed Singapore office will also open sometime this year. The former will developer social games, while the latter’s role is unknown. The BC government seems pretty chuffed to have secured a new source of jobs – especially among recent reports of games industry companies packing up and heading east.

Thanks, Joystiq.
