Breakout playable in-browser thanks to Google Easter egg

If you run a Google Image Search on “Atari Breakout”, you’ll get a pleasant surprise – a fully playable version of the classic arcade game, using recoloured search results. While we’re on the topic, I’m sure you’ve all tried a web search for “Zerg Rush”, right?

Gyromancer and Hitman: Sniper Challenge now available through Square’s CoreOnline service

Square Enix has announced that Hitman: Sniper Challenge, the pre-order incentive for Hitman: Absolution, and Gyromancer – the puzzle-RPG – are now available on its free-to-play platform, CoreOnline. The service now features six games available instantly in your browser, with more games to come. Users can play on the service free for 20 minutes per day, with advertisements included or purchase a subscription for $2.99 per month to get unlimited access to all games without advertising. Just a little blip if you’re feeling at a loss for entertainment this afternoon: Candy Box is a strange and delightful little browser game doing the rounds on Twitter today. Evoking a feeling very similar to social game mechanics but with none of the advertising, friend nagging or general slimy feeling, it lets you save your game with a code word and rewards patient exploration. Try not to spoil it for everyone else.

Duke Nukem creator’s Ludum Dare entry is The Road

Here’s another piece of the spoils from the most recent Ludum Dare challenge, which asks designers to create games in just 48 hours. The Road comes courtesy of George Broussard of Duke Nukem and 3D Realms fame, and is a very minimalist platformer about the various challenges encountered in the course of a human lifetime – like drowning in a swimming pool or facing an alien invasion. It’s kind of neat. Don’t forget to check out Notch’s Drop, not a formal Ludum Dare game but created in the same spirit.
