Tougeki 2013 cancelled, tournament’s future in doubt
“Super Battle Opera” Tougeki, a global arcade game tournament based in Japan, has announced it is taking a break. An announcement on the decade-old tournament’s website, says only that “extenuating circumstances” caused the suspension of this year’s planned events. However, there’s some hope for a return, with organisers planning to continue hosting other events and working towards a relaunch.

Velocity Ultra for PS Vita unveiled with a trailer
You might remember the PS Mini Velocity, a twin stick action thingie, from way back when (last year), and now it’s getting an HD update and a full PSN release for the Vita, with touch mechanics and everything. This is the same game, but the developers say they’ve changed tons of stuff based on player feedback, and of course it’s more visually attractive. Trailer inside:

Missile Command record broken after 31 years
This weekend, Swedish gamer Victor Sandberg set out to take the Missile Command record, set in 1982 by Victor Ali with a score of 80.5 million. The determined arcade fan livestreamed his attempt, which lasted over 56 hours, and eventually took the crown by bowing out with 81,796,035 points. You can watch a recording the stream, or just check out this clip of the record being surpassed, and Sandberg’s eventual game over. The original Missile Command was released in 1980 via Atari and Sega.

The Pinball Arcade in development for PS4
The Pinball Arcade is in development for PS4, it has been announced. According to a development post over on the PS Blog, the team is “adding rendering tech for per pixel ray casting, area lights/shadows, point lights and screen space ambient occlusion,” to the game on the new console. The physics and gameplay on all of the DLC tables released will also be updated, and the team is “very confident” it can add these features on PS4 and maintain 60 fps.

Wii U party game Spin the Bottle should release in May, gets zany new trailer
Spin the Bottle isn’t a game about awkward kissing. Instead it’s a Wii U party game that sees players spinning a WiiMote on their Wii U GamePad screen to trigger bizarre mini-games. It doesn’t use your television at all, and features a host of colourful characters.

Street Fighter X Mega Man surpasses 1 million downloads
Street Fighter X Mega Man has surpassed one million downloads worldwide, according to Capcom. While the actual number could be larger due to the freeware potentially being offered elsewhere, Capcom is sure of at least the one million portion. Over on Capcom Unity, the firm also wanted to remind everyone that Mega Man 3 will land on 3DS Virtual Console March 14, and Mega Man 4-6 will following in consecutive order each month.

Runner 2 Wii U patch in the works to fix crash bug
Gaijin Games is working on a Wii U patch for Runner 2, and the main fix coming will squash a bug which freezes the console when powered down or exiting to the main menu.

Asylum Kickstarter funded, new stretch goal added with 44 hours left
With 44 hours to go on its Kickstarter, the developers of Asylum have added a new stretch goal, which is oddly enough $166,666. Upon being met, a complete rework of Asylum will be distributed as an expansion which is being dubbed Asylum: Memories. A 20 second teaser for it is below. The game was also recently greenlit on Steam Greenlight.

Bit.Trip Presents Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien developer Gaijin Games has released a new gameplay trailer for its sprint-em-up. It looks rather shiny and should appeal to fans of Canabalt, Temple Run and all those other cardio-intensive romps.

Star Wars Pinball – Boba Fett trailer features a Han Solo spinner, the deadly Sarlacc
Zen Studios has released a new video for Star Wars Pinball, and it features the Boba Fett table. This particular table will contain several “major moments” in the bounty hunter’s career as such as jobs given by the Galactic Empire and the Hutts. The table contains a spinner featuring Han Solo in Carbonite and the Great Pit of Carkoon featuring the tentacled Sarlacc. Star Wars Pinball is releasing next week on the following platforms: App Store, Google Play, XBL, and PSN with Cross-Buy.

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth team nearly ready for new content
In a quick update to his personal blog, Edmund McMillen has said work on The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is coming along swimmingly. A significant number of assets from the original game have been reproduced in the re-releases 16-bit art style, and the artists will soon move on to working on new content. McMillen said he’s “quite happy with how things are looking” and that “the game is in good hands”. Rebirth is a console re-release of the experimental rogue-like, freed from its Flash engine constraints to support new content and an overhauled art style thanks to Nicalis. Platforms and release date are still to be confirmed.

Metal Slug 2 out now on Android, iOS
SNK Playmore has made good on its promise and delivered Metal Slug 2 to Google Play and the Apple App Store. The $4 title is described as a “perfect port” but Destructoid reports it also includes the chance to replay stages in Mission Mode, an auto-fire option, leaderboards and Bluetooth multiplayer. Mario Kart Arcade GP DX announced: Namco & Nintendo developing
Mario Kart: Arcade GP DX has a very awkward name, but it’s coming to Japanese arcades, courtesy of Namco Bandai and Nintendo. It seems that both companies are getting rather cosy lately, as they have also teamed up on the next iteration of Super Smash Bros. Alien Breed hits PlayStation 3, Vita next week
Team 17′s classic Alien Brees is headed to the US PlayStation Network on February 12. Priced at $10, with a 20% discount for Plus members, the PlayStation 3 and Vita title supports cross-save and cross-play as well as local, ad-hoc and online multiplayer. The fondly-remember top-down shooter title has had an optional HD graphics overhaul, too, which you can see in action through the break.
