The NPD Group’s January 2012 report on US retail shows a marked depression over past years’ results.

Combined software, hardware and accessory sales dropped from $1.14 billion in January 2011 to $750.6 million, a 34% decrease.

Software sales amounted to $355.9 million with hardware coming in at $199.5 million, each representing a 38% year-on-year decrease. Accessories dropped 18% to $195.2 million.

NPD analyst Liam Callahan noted that the NPD’s figures cover only traditional retail channels, and noted a probable consumer spend of $350 million to $450 million on digital and online channels.

Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter said January 2012′s sales are lower than those of January 2004.

Software
Callahan said the percentage of sales accounted for by new releases dropped a startling 99%.

“Games like Dead Space 2, Little Big Planet 2, and DC Universe Online ranked within the top ten last year, making for a poor comparison in January ’12 where there were no major releases,” he said.

“As shoppers were not drawn to stores due to new launch activity, this potentially impacted additional software purchases made on impulse.”

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 took the number one position for the third consecutive month since it’s launch. Activision’s successes didn’t end there – surprise mega-hit Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventures continued to sell through the post-holiday lull, taking the eighth spot.

Shooter rival Battlefield 3 also maintained sales, coming in fifth, but it was The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim which proved the strongest rival to Modern Warfare 3′s crown, in second place.

3DS was under-represented, with just one exclusive entry, but beleaguered publisher THQ will be happy to see Saints Row: The Third proving a reliable meal-ticket.

The top ten best-selling games across all platforms are listed below.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (PC, PS3, Wii, X360)

Just Dance 3 (Wii, X360)

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (PC, PS3, X360)

NBA 2K12 (PC, PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii, X360)

Battlefield 3 (PC, PS3, X360)

Madden NFL 12 (PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii, X360)

Mario Kart 7 (3DS)

Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventures (3DS, PC, PS3, Wii, X360)

Zumba Fitness 2: Party Yourself (Wii)

Saints Row: The Third (PC, PS3, X360)

Microsoft-supplied US hardware sales chart.

Platform Wars

Microsoft revealed that Xbox 360 shifted 270,000 units during January, a 29% decrease on December. The company claimed to hold a 49% market share on hardware sales, putting combined PS3, Wii and 3DS sales at around 280,000 – a significant drop on last year’s hardware sales, despite the addition of a new handheld.

January is the Xbox 360′s 13th consecutive month as the best-selling console in the US during January.

“Historically, after several years in the console lifecycle there is a softening of demand, but Xbox 360 continues to defy that convention. Xbox 360 has found new ways to extend the lifecycle of the console by re-imagining entertainment and delivering new technologies like Kinect for Xbox 360, a new Xbox dashboard, and new entertainment content partners in 2011,” the company said in a statement.

Microsoft claims a platform total retail spend of $301 million – the 11th consecutive month the Xbox 360 has out-performed all comers.

“In 2012, Xbox 360 will again launch blockbuster games, including additions to the famed Halo and Fable franchises. The more than 50 Xbox LIVE entertainment partners will continue to expand with many more launching this year. Xbox 360 will also launch entirely new ways to interact with favorite television shows with groundbreaking experiences like Kinect Sesame Street TV and Nat Geo TV, forever changing the way people interact with entertainment,” the company said in closing.

Sony didn’t have much to boast of this month, but it did out-perform its own expectations.

“Following a strong December at retail, PlayStation continued the momentum in January through multi-retailer promotions such as ‘Play Days’ where we saw a 2x lift over forecast in peripheral sales and solid results for the PlayStation 3,” senior corporate communication’s director Patrick Seybold said.

“February will be a landmark month for PlayStation and the gaming industry with the launch of PlayStation Vita on February 22. Pre-order sales for PS Vita and the launch lineup of 25 titles continue to accelerate as more consumers seek the ultimate in handheld gameplay.”

ASCII Media Works, known for its Dengeki magazines, has reported that Resident Evil: Revelations has sold-through 75% of its initial shipment in Japan its first week on sale, which essentially is around 158,012 copies. The figures show a discrepancy between ASCII’s figures and those of Media Create’s, which stated earlier this week the Capcom title moved 146,559 units its first week on sale. Furthermore, ASCII’s figures state another debut, Tales of Innocence R for Vita, moved 70% of its shipment, which is close to 53,000 copies, a bit less than the 54,853 reported by Media Create. Regardless which figures are correct, both debuts did well the first week on offer. Thanks, Siliconera.

PS Vita have rebounded slightly in Japan after week-over-week declines since launch, and the new handheld should send Namco a thank you card for the resurgence, as it was due to Tales of Innocence R’s debut which did it. Over on Media Create’s weekly software chart, the Tales game wasn’t the only debut in the top three, as Armored Core V and Resident Evil Revelations took the number one and second place spots, respectively.

Armored Core V topped the charts with 163,906 units moved on PS3, and the Xbox 360 version landed at number six with 24,719 units sold.

Resident Evil Revelations hit 3DS running with 146,559 units moved, and Tales of Innocence R moved 54,853 units for the three spot, which gave Vita a title in the top 20 once more.

The other debut for the week, Namco’s PSP title Gundam Mokuba no Kiseki, landed at 11 with 9,121 units sold.

Over on the hardware end, last week, PS2 and Xbox 360 were the only systems to show growth; however, Media Create’s latest figures show the growth was sort-lived, as both declined in sales for the week.

PSP and its handheld competitors DSi and DSi LL also saw a sales decline during the period. Wii and PS3 sales were up slightly over the prior week, but 3DS and Vita were the clear winners in the growth department with an extra 3,829 and 3,723 units moved, respectively, over the prior week.

The full top 20 for the week ending January 29 with LtD sales in parentheses is posted below. Last week’s chart can be found here.

PS Vita sales in Japan continued to decline last week according to Media Create’s weekly sales chart. The system moved 15,219 units, which is 3,142 units less than the prior week, and is the system’s lowest sales period since it launched in the region during December.

Furthermore, no software titles represented the system on Media Create’s top 20, as PS3 and PSP claimed three titles each and Xbox 360 had a software title in the top five, D3′s Onechanbara Z Kagura, which helped boots sales of the hardware by 69 units over the week prior.

The rest of the chart was was dominated by titles for 3DS and Wii, which had seven and six on offer, respectively.

Debuts for the period included Rhythm Thief and Onechanbara Z Kagura, which sold 31,598 and 22,013 units, respectively. Other debuts for the week were Heroes Phantasia and Beyond the Labyrinth, each moving under 16,000 units.

Mario Kart 7 was the clear winner though with 35,105 units sold, bringing its LtD total since releasing in December to 1,404,728 units.

Sales of current generation systems were down overall across the board, except, as noted above for Xbox 360. However, PS2 sales increased over the prior week by 137 units.

It’s unclear at present why PS2 had a boost in sales given the information provided to us at press time.

The full top 20 for the week with LtD sales in parentheses is posted below. Last week’s chart can be found here.

PS Vita sales showed a drastic decline on Media Create’s weekly sales chart with only 18,361 units moved, a 57% decline over the 42,648 units sold last week. On the software end, Namco’s Super Robot Taise OG Saga Masou Kishin II moved 81,996 units for its debut on PSP.

In Japan, Vita saw an upswing at launch, but sales have progressively dropped ever since:

Launch: 324,859

Week 2: 72,479

Week 3: 42,648

Week 4: 18,361

For the week ending January 15, the holiday sales drop not only affected Vita, but 3DS as well, with unit sales for the handheld dropping 50% over the week prior, despite still maintaining the top spot on the hardware chart.

Media Create has stopped reporting sales of DS Lite, which last week only sold 28 units in the region.

PS3 and PSP, which landed in second and thrid place, respectively, also saw a drop in sales.

The full hardware chart with last week’s sales in parentheses is below, courtesy of Andriasang.

ERA’s 2011 UK Entertainment reports shows that between its release on November 8 through the end of 2011, Modern Warfare 3 moved 2,814,609 units in the region, a number which falls 451,789 copies short of its predecessor, Black Ops for the same period in 2010, when it moved 3,266,298 copies. The Call of Duty series wasn’t the only franchise to note a slump compared to a previous release, as EA’s FIFA 12 sold 196,929 copies less than FIFA 11, which moved 2,193,302 units for the same period in 2010. The numbers reflect the downward trend of UK game sales, which were down 13% in 2011 year-over-year.

NPD December 2011 report has shown US industry sales at $3.99 billion, a 21% year-over-year decline.

“Overall industry results are not entirely surprising given that we are on the back end of the current console lifecycle, combined with the continued digital evolution of gaming,” noted NPD’s Anita Frazier. “Core gamers continue to be engaged and spend on established franchises across both the digital and physical format using multiple devices for different gaming occasions.”

December at a Glance

Hardware sales at $1.32 billion, a 28% year-over-year decline.

Xbox 360 moves 1.7 million units; total retail spend on 360 in December was $1.5 billion.

3DS and the DS the only platforms with a unit sales increase over November.

Software sales hit $2.04 billion, a 14% year-over-year decline.

Top 3 games for the month: Modern Warfare 3, Just Dance 3 and Skyrim, respectively.

Hardware sales plummet 28%

Hardware sales were down 28% year-over-year to $1.32 billion compared to 2010′s $1.84 billion, a $520 million difference.

“Hardware was particularly hard hit in December,” noted Fraiser. “Normally, we see sales increase from November to December on an average sales per week basis (keeping in mind December is a 5-week retail month as compared to November which is a four-week retail month).

“The 3DS and the DS were the only platforms to realize a unit sales increase versus November, which is highly unusual since typically all platforms enjoy a lift in the biggest month at retail.”

Xbox 360 sold 1.7 million units in December, a decline of 8.6%, making it the tenth consecutive month the console held a over 40% market share. It’s now been the top-selling console in the US for 12 straight months.

Microsoft estimated that approximately half of December’s retail spend on games, consoles and accessories went toward Xbox 360 products, totaling more than $1.5 billion. The firm now boasts an overall 46% of total console market share in the US.

Sony responded to tonight’s figures, saying PS3 had a “banner 2011″ with an increase in hardware and peripheral sales. Sony, as previously reported this week, sold 6.5 million units of hardware worldwide in 2011.

Accessories sales also showed a 27% year-over-year decline, with NPD reporting $628.7 million for December, compared to $863.5 million in 2010.

Software down 14%

Sales in retail software showed a year-over-year decline of 14%, with sales reaching $2.04 billion compared to 2010′s $2.37 billion. Still, software sales for HD platforms were up 8% in dollars for the month.

During the month of December, seven of the top 10 titles on the NPD chart were available for Xbox 360, eight were available on PS3, and six were available for Nintendo platforms.

Nintendo has yet to release its statement.

Star Wars: The Old Republic was the 14th best-selling title in December, and while the collector’s edition sold less than the regular SKU, both generated about the same in dollar sales.

“The top 20 titles in December generated nearly half total software revenue for the month, which is very high,” said Frazier. “There is one title that would have fallen in the top 10 for December if we were ranking on an SKU basis rather than on a combined platform basis as we do now: Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword was the 10th best selling software SKU for the month of December.”

NPD Software Top 10

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (360, PS3, Wii, PC)

Just Dance 3 (Wii, 360, PS3)

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (360, PS3, PC)

Mario Kart 7 (3DS)

Battlefield 3 (360, PS3, PC)

Madden NFL 12 (360, PS3, Wii, PSP, PS2)

According to Andriasang‘s translation of Enterbrain’s data, the figures pertain to the period between December 27 2010 and December 25 2011, and represent an 8% decline from 2010′s results. The report demonstrates a downwards trend seen in previous years but does not account for digital sales.

Hardware
Hardware generated ¥179,740 million thanks to the release of the 3DS and Vita, a 2.4 % increase. The 3DS was, unsurprisingly, the best-selling console of the year with over 4 million sales, and was followed by the evergreen PSP and hometown favourite PlayStation 3.

Full data follows.

Enterbrain Japanese hardware sales (2011 / Life to date)

3DS: 4,135,739 / NEW

PSP: 1,960,177 / 18,237,108

PlayStation 3: 1,467,261 / 7,417,148

Wii: 937,451 / 12,167,743

DS: 711,204 / 32,835,502

Vita: 402,794 / NEW

Xbox 360: 114,075 / 1,520,738

Software
Software painted a grimmer scene: Revenue fell by 14% to ¥274,640. A lack of major sellers through the year may be to blame; the top two best-sellers released in December, while the bottom two are perennial favourites.

Enterbrain Japanese software sales
Life to date sales follow in parentheses.

[3DS] Mario Kart 7 (December 1): 1,082,391

[3DS] Super Mario 3D Land (November 11): 1,042,511

[PSP] Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (December 1, 2010): 1,021,457 (4,502,446)

UK trade body UKIE has released its annual industry report, and in 2011, boxed games sales came in at £1.42 billion, which is down 7% over 2010 which was still ahead of industry forecasts.

Overall, the total gross in the UK during the 52 weeks of 2011 came in at £2.520 billion, an overall drop of 13%. This equated to 82.0 million units sold all-told in the UK.

Total sales of console software came to £1.35 billion, with growth coming from Xbox 360 and 3DS with total hardware sales coming £646 million. Revenue from console and PC gaming accessories was £453 million, which is a 17% drop over 2010 with total sales reaching 22.4 million units, down 13%.

Motion Controller Devices accounted for around 11% of accessory units in 2011 and accounted for 27% of revenue. Total motion-enabled software across all consoles were up 6.7% in 2010 to 14.5% in 2011. The top-selling motion control software titles across all three formats in 2011 were Just Dance 3 for Wii, LittleBigPlanet 2 for PS3 and Forza Motorsport 4 for Xbox 360.

Traditional accessory units declined 23% and 27% in revenue.

“In a year when overall consumer spending was down, 2011 proved to be a better than expected year for the UK’s boxed-product games market,” said UKIE Chairman Andy Payne. “Helped by the launch of many top quality titles, particularly in quarter four, total software sales of £1.42 billion was better than many predicted.

“2011 still saw some remarkable achievements, including the release of Activision Blizzard’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, which exploded into UKIE Games Charts in week 45, 2011 generating £83 million and 2 million units in the UK over the first 5 days. And of course there was the launch of Nintendo’s 3DS hand-held, giving developers and publishers the chance of finding new and innovative ways to engage audiences.

“The industry looks forward to the continued popularity of cloud, mobile and casual platforms in 2012. And we’re also looking forward to the launch of Sony’s new Vita hand-held and the possible UK launch of Nintendo’s Wii U, both of which have the potential to re-ignite the console market, prior to any announcements concerning successors to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PS3.”

XIII-2 topped the software list for the week ending December 18 with 524,217 copies sold.
The sales are for the PS3 version, with the 360 SKU not charting in the top 20.

The highest charting Vita launch title was Hot Shots Golf 6 in seventh, followed by Uncharted: Golden Abyss at eighth.

Also debuting inside the top 20 from Vita is Shin Kamaitachi no Yoru: 11 Hitome no Suspect, BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend, Dynasty Warriors Next and Lord of Apocalypse.

3DS holds off Vita in hardware battle

But Vita itself was unable to dislodge 3DS from the top of the hardware charts, with Vita selling 324,859 compared to 3DS’s 367,691.

PS3 came third with 65,119, while PSP maintained strong pace with 64,468 units sold.
