Warframe to host open beta this weekend

Warframe is a co-operative online free-to-play third-person shooter with randomly-generated missions, sweet ninja swords and a variety of unlockable weapons, upgrade, special abilities and classes – all from the makers of the excellent The Darkness 2. You are invited to join the Tenno this weekend, from 12:00PM EST on February 15 to 9:00AM EST February 19, thanks to an open beta event. You don’t need a key, but you will need to be registered, so visit Warframe to get on that.

The unusual historical board game is still in beta, but buying in now at $10 off garners you access to the full release in northern spring, which will cost $15. There’s a demo available for both PC and Mac, and there’s a trailer through the break. Developer Mousechief also produced the excellent Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble.

Crysis 3 beta ToS mention bug reporting bans, won’t be enforced

Crysis 3′s multiplayer beta has kicked off, and its terms of service include the same harsh penalties for failing to report bugs as in the SimCity beta. “We aren’t enforcing that,” the Crysis Twitter account told players, noting that the text was in the beta before the initial scandal drew attention to the clause. EA has already apologised for the severe wording, promised to change it, and said it would not carry through the threat. Crysis 3 is due in mid-February on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Steam for Linux beta now open to all

Valve has opened the Steam for Linux beta to all comers. In a brief announcement post, the developer provided a series of useful links. Grab the Ubuntu client here; browse the 39 compatible games here; participate in the community here; and report any issues here. The beta was heralded by the sudden appearance of system requirements last week.

Darkfall: Unholy Wars beta delayed by persistance bug

A post on the Darkfall forums explains why the latest entry in the MMO series, Unholy Wars, hasn’t gone into beta as expected. The testing session has been delayed while Adventurine wipes out a particularly nasty persistance bug which occasionally robs players of all their gear.

Hawken opens local Australian, Japanese and Singaporean servers

Hawken publisher Meteor and developer Adhesive Games have opened servers for Australian, Japanese and Singaporean gamers. Ausgamers reports these new destinations aren’t just dedicated servers located in the US, but properly hosted local offerings. You can get on board your closest server from the drop-down regional menu in the matchmaking menu. What’s that? You’re not in the closed beta? Oh gosh, I tripped and fell and spilled a bunch of keys everywhere. So clumsy. Hawken launches on December 12.

Steam for Linux beta expanded to 5,000 more users

Valve has a small holiday present for Linux users; a further 5,000 volunteer testers have been given the green light for its Ubuntu client beta. If you signed up, be sure to check your inbox and spam folders carefully, and you could be playing Left 4 Dead 2 over the long weekend. Valve says it is making good progress in smoothing out the test client, which was first made available to testers in early November.

SWTOR Update 1.6 now available on test servers

Star Wars: The Old Republic fans keen on new content can check out upcoming Update 1.6, Ancient Hypergate, on the MMORPG’s test servers. The beta includes a new warzone in which players battle to control a portal which promises to deliver reinforcements but can damage the controlling team, as well as a six new heroic missions for each faction, which reward elite gear and Black Hole Commendations.
