Ubisoft's space game Pioneer hasn't been cancelled after all

Pioneer is now a co-op multiplayer shooter, rather than a space exploration game.

Ubisoft's reveal of Pioneer was as an E3 trailer that Watch Dogs 2 players are tasked with stealing from the studio's in-game counterpart. Earlier this month, the game was thought to be dead in the water, but it's apparently been rebooted as a shooter, rather than being cancelled outright.

Kotaku reports that the game has taken a different direction after a troubled development process.

“Old Pioneer is dead,” one of the anonymous sources at Ubisoft. "Pioneer’s half-undead brother is here."

The rebooted title is reportedly a co-op online multiplayer shooter being made with Rainbox Six's Anvil game engine.

It's still being set against the backdrop of space, and apparently pits players against aliens.

Kotaku's sources have said that it will use some of the original Pioneer's features.
