DayZ, Arma developer will give you a new, totally free shooter this month
Argo is a new shooter from Bohemia Interactive that costs zero dollars - and has no microtransactions.
Argo is a tactical FPS from the developer of DayZ Standalone and the lauded but arguably inaccessible Arma series, and it comes out on June 22 via Steam and the Bohemia Store.
Having begun life as a total conversion mod for Arma 3, the prototype Project Argo has been playable for a while. For those who aren't aware of it, the basic deal in Argo is players take on the role of mercenaries from either of two rival factions, and battle it out over Malden - 62 km² of open world terrain closely modelled on the map used for Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, later retitled Arma.
Argo has multiple competitive modes, which you can learn more about in the videos throughout this article; the 5v5 Clash mode is the one the developer wants to highlight first, apparently. There's also a co-op mode called Combat Patrol, which sends squads of up to ten players out against AI in the open world, with randomised objectives and enemies. There's also a lightweight scenario editor for you to make your own content.
Argo also has a number of obligatory modern shooter features - an XP-based progression system, unlocks, gear customisation. You can read more about it on the Argo blog. One important thing to know right now, though, is that it's totally free, and has no microtransactions.
However, if you do like Argo and want to support it you can optionally make a one time macrotransaction of $10/€10 and buy the Argo Supporter’s Pack. This grants you a bundle of exclusive content and rewards not available to free players - 14 play-of-the-game animations, 22 cosmetics, access to supporter servers, the ability to use vehicles in the 3D Scenario Editor, and special highlights on your name in the leaderboards. So there's still a have and have-nots situation going on.
