The Surge's superior engine tech gives it an edge on Dark Souls, especially on PS4 Pro - report

The Surge is an extremely polished game, on all three platforms.

The Surge has been pretty fairly described as sci-fi Dark Souls, but as well as bringing its own spin on the hardcore action RPG genre, developer Deck13 Interactive has done a tremendous job of raising the technology bar.

As Eurogamer's Digital Foundry reports in the video above, the in-house Fledge Engine is a thing of beauty and a joy forever. Building on this very solid base, Deck13 has managed to wring top-notch performance from both PS4 and Xbox One, with scaling benefits on more powerful PCs. The Surge has a steady frame rate, comparatively tiny load times, and even a nice small install footprint.

Although the report has praise for every version of The Surge, the PS4 Pro build gets a bit of extra love because it makes use of the console's extra power in a way few other games have - and more successfully than any other examples.

PS4 Pro users can switch between a higher resolution and locked 30 fps, or a performance mode locked at 1080p running at a nearly unshakeable 60 fps. That's the same dream offered by Nioh and Rise of the Tomb Raider, but neither really pulled it off smoothly.

If all this has convinced you to give it a go, we've got 12 hot tips for The Surge and a guide to expanding your Implant slots to 12. Still on the fence? Check out The Surge reviews, or read Sherif's lengthy deliberations as he compares it to the Souls series, his favourite.

By the way, the report also goes into detail of how Deck13 achieved such good results throughout The Surge, regardless of platform - so if you're good with technical stuff, tune on in above.
