Gaijin Entertainment, the publisher behind the popular free-to-play WW2 air and tank combat simulator War Thunder, has announced its next project, Enlisted.

Enlisted is a WW2 squad-based shooter MMO that promises hundreds of players and massive battlefields. The plan is to release separate games that each cover a specific campaign of the war, beginning with Invasion of Normandy, followed by the Battle of Moscow.

Gaijin is asking players to fund development of future WW2 campaigns, but work is already underway on the Normany and Moscow campaigns.

The crowfunding campaign's first goal is $250,000 will allow developer Darkflow to work on the Tunisia campaign, $500,000 will get everyone another campaign, chosen by players. At $750,000, a "game module" will be added, also chosen by players. The campaign page does not mention what a game module is, though.

Finally, $1 million ensures the game gets released on consoles. Backers will get first dips on each of the campaigns, which will all release first in Steam Early Access.

Enlisted was born from the studio's desire to create a WW2 shooter in which battles have objective similar to what soldiers had in the war, and not simply small skirmishes against a historical backdrop.

"Battles involving equal teams in equal conditions are, of course, interesting as a competition. But they do not have the immersion or the thrill of real battle, where balanced forces and symmetrical objectives are unlikely," the pitch reads.

You can back the project at various tiers, starting at $7 all the way up to $50. You can get either the Moscow or Normandy campaigns, along with an upgraded rifle, for $22. Though it shows promise, it's worrying to see backer perks include improved weapons to what's going to be available in-game.

Enlisted will be released sometime in 2017.
