Sea of Thieves: players crew and battle a pirate ship in Rare's latest

Rare's mysterious pirate game Sea of Thieves was shown off during Microsoft's E3 2016 briefing.

The gameplay above was captured when a group of lucky Rare fans visited the studio to be among the first in the world to try the multiplayer open world pirate adventure. They secured their places through a community competition.

Although we had expected Sea of Thieves to release this year, it's still being described as "early in development" and Microsoft didn't provide an update in this regard. It will evolve over time with community feedback, apparently.

It sounds a little bit freeform at present, with Rare and Microsoft saying players determine their own rules and adventures in a shared world. There'll be Windows 10 and Xbox One cross-play.

Take a look at some screens below; it looks like other pirates won't be the only dangers you face.
