Doom beta: a mostly stable 60fps thanks to aggressive resolution scaling - report

The Doom open beta, which took place over the weekend, may not have gone down well with the PC community, but that doesn't mean it's not a technical show piece.

Having already unlocked the frame-rate on PC, id Software seems to be getting better and better with the engine, and the PS4 and Xbox One versions only helps prove this.

Putting the two versions side by side, Digital Foundry reports that both of them maintain the target 60 frames-per-second for the most part. Drops below 60fps do happen, as low as 55fps on PS4 and 50fps on Xbox One, but don't occur frequently enough to affect the overall performance.

The report also praised the clean image quality of the game, which is in part thanks to the anti-aliasing method id is using.

The studio's Tiago Sousa later clarified on Twitter that the game employs a custom TSAA solution, with 8x SSSA. According to Sousa, it's also integrated into the resolution scaler, to make transitions harder to spot.

Overall, Digital Foundry found the open beta to be a big improvement over the closed beta and alpha, and the frame-rate comparison below illustrates that.
