Project Blue Steel is the name of an ambitious Superman game that Star Wars: Rogue Squadron and Lair developer Factor 5 worked on for over a year, before finally cancelling it in 2008 and laying off staff.

The game is subject of the recent report from Unseen64, who shows some never-before-seen footage of the canned project.

Blue Steel was in development for PS3, Xbox 360, and the Wii. It was first funded by Brash Entertainment, and was supposed to be a tie-in for a Superman Returns sequel, which itself never saw the light of day. Although the cancellation of the movie gave the studio more freedom in its use of the IP, it was also the beginning of the end.

The game was to be set in an open world where Superman would fight off against a large number of villains. Major characters like Brainiac and Darkseid, as well as as other characters from the expanded DC universe. A key mechanic would allow the player to grab characters and drag them through objects and buildings to weaken them.

Find the full report below, which includes footage showing prototypes of the game's combat, flying, and more.
