Oculus Rift dev kit backers eligible for free consumer model

Oculus is rewarding those who helped the tech firm grow from crowdfunded start-up to consumer launch.

The Oculus Rift headset is tested by attendees at the Eurogamer Expo at Earls Court in London.

Oculus Rift is on the verge of consumer launch, but the Facebook-owned virtual reality company hasn't forgotten its early supporters.

In a Kickstarter update, Oculus announced that all those who purchased a Rift development kit during the initial crowdfunding campaign are eligible to receive a special Kickstarter Edition consumer headset - at no extra cost. As with pre-order consumer units, it comes with bundled copies of Lucky’s Tale and EVE: Valkyrie.

The only catch is you need to have a shipping address in one of 20 launch countries - but still, pretty sweet. If you're among the faithful, check your email diligently for a survey over the next few days.

For everyone else, Oculus Rift pre-orders open on January 6.
