GTA San Andreas outs European PS Store PS2 emulator problems

If you buy a PS2 classic for PS4 from the European PlayStation Store, you'll receive an arguably inferior version to that bought on the US storefront.

Eurogamer's Digital Foundry has uncovered something pretty annoying for European PlayStation fans.

Analysing the frame rate of the PS4 re-release of GTA: San Andreas, the group was not impressed; the frame rate itself was okay, but frame pacing issues detract from the experience. Here's a video comparing three versions of the Rockstar classic and demonstrating the problem.

Annoying, yes - but it gets especially interesting after that, because it turns out the US version doesn't have these issues.

Why? Well, it seems that when you buy the PS4 re-release of GTA San Andreas from the European PlayStation Store, which services the UK and a number of other territories including Australia, you get a version based on the original PAL code. In North America, the package draws on the NTSC version.

Since NTSC and PAL had different refresh standards, and the emulator doesn't make any allowances for this discrepancy, you get a different and possibly inferior output depending on which store you buy from.

This issue also affects Dark Cloud, and presumably other PS2 games. What a shame. Get the full story in the second video below.
