Bungie has announced in its weekly update that you'll be able to experience the competitive multiplayer maps and events of The Taken King from September 8 until September 14, during the Crucible Preview Event.

This preview event will give you access to all the new maps from The Taken King's Crucible, as well as two new game modes. It will be open to all players on all systems who own a copy of Destiny, regardless of whether they have preordered The Taken King or not.

Bungie has clarified that you won't be able to use the new Super abilities from the upcoming expansion during the preview week. You'll have to make do with what you're already equipped with.

Once The Taken King releases on September 15, players will need to buy it to continue playing these Crucible events.
