NHL 16 beta does the hockey equivalent of kicking off on July 30

In a first for the popular hockey series, NHL 16 will hold an open beta.

The NHL 16 beta will kick off face off (really? Huh!) on July 30 and run through August 6, on PS4 and Xbox One.

EA said this will be players only chance to check out "the new EASHL in NHL 16" before launch, which presumably means this online team mode won't be included in any potential demos, trials or EA Access releases.

The beta will be automatically made available to NHL 15 owners on PS4 and Xbox One; just look for the download link in the main menu from July 30 (in North America; Australians and fellow antipodean timezone residents will probably have to wait till August 1). Once downloaded the beta client will be available like any other installed console game.

If you have a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 copy of NHL 15 but have access to a new console, check your email on the regular - some lucky few will receive a code granting acecss to the beta client. Make sure you're on the mailing list if you want in.

More information including an FAQ, feedback links and community features are available direct from EA Sports. NHL 16 launches on September 15.
