Assassin's Creed comic introduces a new character

Assassin's Creed is getting a new comic series introducing a heretofore unseen character.

The cover art for Assassin's Creed #1 was unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con today.

All Games Beta shared the image on Twitter, speculating that we might be looking at a new modern day protagonist - like Desmond in the early Assassin's Creed games.

That's probably a bit of a leap, as existing tie-in comics have featured characters not heavily involved with the main story line of the games.

Despite Ubisoft's early plans to ensure everything in its sprawling transmedia franchise hangs together, some of the other comics produced so far have deviated from events established in the games. But even if it's not canon, I'll be pretty interested to see Ubisoft return to the core modern day plot.

We haven't really seen anything of the modern-day Assassin's Creed story line since Desmond retired at the end of Assassin's Creed 3, beyond a few cryptic non-developments in Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag's unpopular Abstergo office adventures.
