According to sources close to Kotaku, Activision is currently working on a new Guitar Hero game for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The upcoming game's visual style will be different from older releases in the franchise in that it will adopt a "more realistic" approach. An E3 reveal is said to be planned, according to one source.

New guitar peripherals will also be introduced. The game is due before the end of the year.

"We don't comment on rumour or speculation, but have previously said, that as one of the most beloved entertainment franchises, we would only bring Guitar Hero back if we developed the right innovations to usher the franchise into the new generation of gaming," an Activision spokesperson said when contacted by Kotaku.

Talk of an upcoming Rock Band game being developed for new-gen consoles has also been doing the rounds recently. It's important not to mix up both franchises, though it would certainly not be surprising if both games were revealed and released in 2015.
