Xbox One sell-in about to top 10 million thanks to $50 price cut

Xbox One has nearly shipped 10 million units worldwide, Microsoft has announced.

Xbox One sales have "more than tripled" since Microsoft knocked $50 off the US RRP, the platform holder has revealed.

"The response to this wave of blockbuster game releases and new bundles has been amazing, and sales have skyrocketed since the new price took effect on Nov. 2," executive Yusuf Mehdi said on Xbox Wire.

"Compared to the previous week, Xbox One sales in the US have more than tripled, which is exciting as more and more friends will be playing together this holiday.

"As we head into the busy holiday season Xbox One led generation 8 console sales in the US for the past two weeks. Shortly, we will have sold in to retailers more than 10 million Xbox One consoles."

This is our first update on Xbox One sales in quite some time, as Microsoft has kept pretty quiet about it in its financial reporting.

The cheaper PS4 hit the 10 million sales milestone four months ago, and current sales stand at about $13.5 million thanks to a bumper last quarter, although it's important to note that Sony's console is available in more territories than the Xbox One. Still, it's outsold the Xbox One in the US for nine consecutive months. November may be our first break from that narrative.

Microsoft has said the $50 price cut is a holiday promotion through January 3, and the discount has not been extended to other territories like the UK and Europe.
