E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial landfill cartridges now on sale

Remember how Alamogordo City Commission said it would auction off E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial cartridges dug up from the famous Atari landfill? You can buy one - if you're feeling plump in the pocket.

As detailed in the soon-to-be-released documentary Atari: Game Over, the haul includes a number of different Atari 2600 games.

Polygon spotted the cartridges popping up on eBay. E.T. Cartridges have drawn bids of up to $360 at time of writing.

Not all the spoils of the dig will be sold; a number will be donated to museums for preservation, kept by officials or distributed as gifts.

E.T. is notorious as being the game that broke the games industry, although it was very much the proverbial straw on a groaning camel's back. Rumours that Atari dumped its remaining game stock in a New Mexico landfill were considered a legend until the excavation turned up proof.
