What are Grimoire cards?

Grimoire Cards. You pick them up constantly as you play through Destiny's campaign, apparently from shooting stuff, but where do you really find them, how do you view them, and what do they do?

Like many of the concepts in Destiny, the answer is long-winded and multifaceted. But first...

Grimoire Cards: the simple explanation

Grimoire Cards are a Destiny collectible. They have several functions, but on a primary level they reveal more of the Destiny universe's lore.

Destiny will grow as it gets older, so there's no way of telling if more categories of Grimoire cards will be added in the future, but right now there are six.

Within each category are, obviously, sub-categories with sub-categories of their own.

The six basic categories are:

  • Guardian
  • Inventory
  • Allies
  • Enemies
  • Places
  • Activities

How to get Grimoire Cards

The easiest way to get Grimoire Cards is to play the game. You've probably already noticed notifications at the bottom of your screen saying "New Grimoire Card Acquired" as you shoot through the bad guys.

The second method is to revive Dead Ghosts. Check out the rest of our Destiny guide to get all the locations. There are 62 Dead Ghosts in total, and they're found both in the Tower and scattered across Destiny's four planets.

As a side note, finding 50 Dead Ghosts will unlock the Ghost Hunter Trophy/Achievement.

There's a third way to unlock Grimoire cards: you can find codes online to redeem on Bungie.net. There's a bunch of them in a list below. Beungie released loads before launch, just for fun. You'll also find some codes for Shaders and Emblems there.

Redeem the codes at Bungie: Code Redemption. You'll need to be logged into either your Xbox Live or PSN account.

Where can I view my Grimoire cards?

destiny_guide_grimoire_cards_bungie_website

The best way to view the Grimoire cards is on Bungie's website. Just log-in with your Microsoft, PlayStation, Facebook or Google account. It's easiest if you just log-in with Xbox Live or PSN, as the site will automatically link up with your in-game progress: this means any Grimoire cards you unlock will immediately show up on the site.

You can also see the cards through the the Destiny Companion app for iOS or Android devices.

What do Grimoire Cards do?

The million dollar question. Some Grimoire cards don't seem to do anything other than fill you in on Destiny lore, while some can be used in conjunction with consumables to earn Glimmer, Destiny's main currency.

Some Grimoire cards can also help you to level weapons, or even increase the chance of finding loot.

If you're interested in Destiny's lore, flip cards to reveal information about characters, locations and concepts.

If you're after Glimmer, then some Grimoire cards can be combined with consumables to boost your currency-acquiring ability. An example is the Servitor card, found under the Enemies category and Fallen sub-category. Once players reach Rank 1 of the Servitor card by killing 50 of the purple eye things, they can combine it with a consumable, such as the Ether Seeds, from the Inventory. This'll give you a 10-minute Glimmer boost.

Probably the most attractive use of the Grimoire card is to level weapons. If you want to see an example, go to the Inventory category and then the Weapons sub-category. Check out the Auto Rifles card, which has a total of three levels. Once you've killed 2,500 enemies with this weapon, you'll unlock Rank 1. This'll give you extra weapon experience for that specific weapon type, meaning your upgrades will happen faster.
