Next stop on Beamdog's Forgotten Realms tour is Icewind Dale

Baldur's Gate is all very well but there're plenty of destinations in the Forgotten Realms to visit. For example Icewind Dale, which is Beamdog's next stop.

Icewind Dale is the next classic CRPG to be ported by Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2: Enhanced Edition(s) developer Beamdog.

The Enhanced Edition is expected later this year on Android, iOS, Linux, Mac and PC for $20 - you can pre-order now. It adds 60 new items; 31 new kits and classes; cross-platform co-operative play; six expanded quests featuring restored content cut from the original; a new difficulty setting for those who just want to experience the story; the 122 new spells created for Baldur's Gate; and the Heart of Winter and Trials of the Luremaster expansion packs.

Released in 2000, Icewind Dale is one of a family of games based on the Forgotten Realms D&D campaign setting. It's not as famous as its brethren, but it hails from Black Isle Studios, the same team as Planescape: Torment (and Fallout 2, as it happens).

Icewind Dale is different from other famous CRPGs of the era in that it presents more of a blank canvas - you create your own party members. This means there's less witty writing to enjoy, but there's more flexibility in how you approach the gameplay itself.

It kind of broke my heart that Icewind Dale was squeezed off our list of the 50 best RPGs ever. Feel free to share your approbation at this omission.

Thanks, Kotaku.
