Valve has opened a Beta Maps mode for TF2, inviting players to opt-in and experience new maps before they hit general release.

In an FAQ, Valve said is wants to have the TF2 community involved early in the development process, so it can gather feedback while it tries "variations in the map layout and game play mechanics".

"Continually playing the maps is one of the biggest ways you can help us develop. Having servers full of users interacting with each other quickly points out problems with the gameplay that need to be addressed," Valve said.

"We will also be joining servers to play alongside you, shooting down enemies for the greater benefit of the team."

To participate in testing, simply enable the Play Beta Maps checkbox when starting a multiplayer session. Use Valve's TF2 team contact form to link to discussions happening elsewhere, or express your own thoughts.

You're also invited to host your own beta map servers. Valve expects there will be times when maps and game mode rules change substantially, so be prepared for anything.
