Is Nintendo getting Cross-Buy?

Monday, 30th June 2014 20:10 GMT By Sherif Saed

Cross-Buy, if you’re unfamiliar, is a service currently offered by Sony, whereby you buy the game once, and you get it on all the PlayStation platforms its available on. Nintendo may be about to introduce a similar service and Squids Odyssey will be the first game to utilize it.

Nintendo has not officially announced that the system is in the works, however upcoming strategy game Squids Odyssey will offer you a free copy of the game on Wii U, if you buy it on the 3DS. Albeit only through the European eShop, and you have to buy the 3DS version first.

Nintendo has not offered this service in the past, only discounts to those purchasing the same game on multiple platforms.

Do you think this is a sign of things to come?

Thanks, Gamespot.

    They better…I mean they are planning to go cross system aren’t they.

    Bought Shovel Knight on Steam today. It’s still not in the euro eShop and it’s a shame that it is not X buy on the Nintendos. Probably pick it up for 3DS later as well anyway though…It is a fantastic game. Seriously, game needs a feature on here!

    Slowly but surely Nintendo is adapting strategies accepted (either negatively or positively) by the industry, its only a matter of time now…

    Nintendo don’t have many new upcoming games to support this feature and whatever third parties are left won’t bother.

    I don’t think it was a good decision to release a smash bros. game on 3DS.ya know,it kills the chances of attracting 3DS owners to buy a Wii U for that game.Smash bros. Is without any doubts a system seller,but now by being released also on 3DS,the sold consoles for this game will be less compared when it launches only on Wii U.Nintendo should put some more focus on Wii U instead of 3DS.dividing the focus of a game on two platforms instead of one will hurt the console sales a bit.

    Personally i dont care for this feature, i tend to play the best version of games, in this case on home consoles,on hanhelds, i play the exclusive handheld titles that are not available on consoles.

    But Having the option for those who like it and will use it, is great, good for them.

    @Sherif Saed This would be cool, but they are actually completely separate games without cross-play. Games like MH3U could of benefited from this though as they have cross-play.

    @Game Hunter,
    “Nintendo should put some more focus on Wii U instead of 3DS.”
    Why? 3DS is their most successful console right now. You could say ninty would have lost billions on wiiu if 3ds hadn’t cover up the losses. Plus, 3ds dev cost is much lower than wiiu.
    And obviously, wiiu is DOOMED, 3ds isnt by a long shot. They need money, 3ds makes that, wiiu never will. Its a commercial failure.

    @Dragon Nintendo doesn’t really *need* money, they’ve got billions. I’m sure their investors would *like* the U to make a profit, but even if it doesn’t, they have more than enough to start from scratch several more times.

    @Digital Bamboo ,
    I dont know if you ever invested in the market, but investors lose money in millions every time stocks dip, and stock dip a lot when the company shows red ink.
    “Nintendo doesn’t really *need* money, they’ve got billions.”
    They are publicly traded company, they need to make profits. They need to pay billions in every year to investors as dividends to maintain their confidence.
    Apple has got about $100 billion in cash on hand, so why do they try to make money? The answer is as simple as that.

    ” I’m sure their investors would *like* the U to make a profit, but even if it doesn’t, they have more than enough to start from scratch several more times.”
    A sinking ship requires repairs before the water reaches the starboard, not after.
    And no, investors want and expect big profits. Hence you heard Iwata saying things like “We need to make ninty like profits”.

    Oh yeah, if someone wanted proof of how backward ninty is anything “online”, just read this-
    “There is a catch, however. Siliconera got in touch with The Game Bakers and learnt that the promotion only works one way—you buy the game on 3DS and get the Wii U version for free. You will not be able to buy the Wii U version and get a free 3DS copy.”

    And this-
    “They replied: “Yes we did ask, we really like this promotion and wished to make it happen for all gamers, but NOA could not support this kind of promotion.”

    So NOA could not afford cross-buy for a digital (afaik) game. Wonder how Sony does that for even many retail games..
