Stephen Fry returns for LittleBigPlanet 3

Friday, 13th June 2014 14:34 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

In LittleBigPlanet 3, you once again play as a little sack person. Here’s one of you. Aww bless. You’re quite a cute one.

Who can forget such lovely words when uttered by narrator Stephen Fry? The games just wouldn’t feel the same without British actor and comedian.

Fans of the series should be pleased to know the man himself will reprise his role in the third outing.

Sony XDev Europe and Sumo Digital, the developers of the title, confirmed the news to Gamespot during E3 2014 this week.

LBP3 is coming to PS4 in November and was announced during Sony’s E3 presentation.

    Outrageous. Why wasn’t a woman given this opportunity?

    Also: Sackboy. Game after game of LBP all favouring one gender. Even if I put a dress on him, it’s still a him.

    Disgusting.

    I’m pretty sure it’s called Sackthing?

    Google “Sackboy” – 1,790,000 results
    Google “Sackthing” – 14,900 results

    Indoctrination is already complete. Shameful gender-favouritism well established.

    Disgusting.

    Yaaaaaaaay! GLEE!

    Stephen Fry is one of my all time favourite people. He’s so stubbornly individual, he’s smarter with the English language than just about anyone else I can think of, he’s a lovely person, and he’s gay. What a guy. I’m always so happy to hear he’s in something, and it’s nice to see his return to LBP. LBP isn’t the same without him.

    This news has made me smile and generally feel good, but LittleBigPlanet has that effect on me in general. Especially the first one.

    @1

    Ooh, a thicky!

    Because, thicky, representation is about all marginalised groups. Stephen Fry is openly gay, and it’s always lovely to see him in just about anything. I’m sure women are perfectly fine with letting a gay guy have the limelight occasionally, since gay men are in the same sort of boat. Anyone who doesn’t explicitly resign themselves to societally rigid and extremely dull gender and sexuality roles is pretty much going to be marginalised by every thicky out there.

    Sadly, for every intelligent person, there are hundreds of thousands of thickies. Just. Like. You. You can probably take solace in that fact. You outnumber intelligent people by a huge margin. Which, by the by, that’s what it means when you’re marginalising other people. Entertainment focused at thickies doesn’t really let anyone else have a look in.

    I think ‘thicky’ is going to become my word for ‘overly proud, excessively arrogant, healthy, straight, white, cis-gendered, extroverted man who’s anti-intellectual and oh so very afraid of women and other minorities.’ Because those minorities are going to steal his ice cream, don’cha know?

    It’s just shorter to type out, anyway. And it’s so apt. Thicky.

    Also, it isn’t ‘Sackboy,’ thicky, it’s Sack Person. They can be (and have been) referred to as sackboy, sackgirl, sackchum, sack thing, and many other monikers. The idea is that you assign the gender yourself, it’s the player’s prerogative which gender they want their sack creature to be, that’s how it always was. Stephen Fry, in the tutorial of the first game, referred to them as ‘sack persons’ and ‘sack people.’

    How’d you miss that, thicky?

    Even better, you can refer to your genderless sack creature as a man, and dress it up as a woman, as a woman and dress it up as a man, or you can do whatever you bloody well like with them. And I think that’s fantastic!

    Stephen Fry refers to them as ‘sack persons’ in the tutorial of LBP1. Not sure how you missed that, thicky.

    You’re such a particularly thick little thicky. You can’t get anything right.

    @2

    That’s one of the monikers. Yeah. Don’t mind #1, he’s woefully misinformed and poorly educated. Getting things wrong is his raison d’etre. Just a typical little thicky.

    @3

    What thickies like yourself regularly type into Google (as you favour other thickies over any other type of person), and what’s established as official are too very different things, thicky.

    You can’t blame LittleBigPlanet for what thickies do on the Internet. That’s thick, thicky.

    @5

    Is that actually going to start happening? I think that I wouldn’t feel so agitated if I wasn’t dealing with people like him, regularly. I don’t normally go for heavy moderation, but… I don’t know. I was nice to console owners before the console elitists, until I just got sick of it.

    I’d understand if you consider me to be a disruption, too. I wouldn’t hold it against you.

    @TheWulf I get complaints about him all the time. No one complains about you. I’m bored of him now (again).

    @Patrick Garrat:

    That seems pretty uncool, I’m assuming you’re a mod considering that message. Satirical referencing to a public event on this site not even a few hours old doesn’t seem like a bannable offense. I’m not completely knowledgeable concerning the ToS of VG247 comments, but considering the community involvement of VG247 editors and their liberal use of informal langauge and tongue-in-cheek devil may care attitudes, I’d have suspected the same level of leniency would apply to users.

    Sure enough thread-mixing belongs to a well-documented blog-o-sphere faux pas, but no other user/editor/person was explicitly verbally abused in this instance. Seems like an overreaction at the least, the result of a witch hunt in the worst case scenario. I’d stuff this in a PM if there was such functionality, but there is not (to my knowledge).

    @yeoung Pat owns VG24/7. It is his baby, to run as he sees fit and the editorial team are his to command. If you don’t like what he does, then go somewhere else or start your own business.

    Speaking of marginalization, please do yourself a service and re-read your comment just now and try to do so objectively.

    “I think ‘thicky’ is going to become my word for ‘overly proud, excessively arrogant, healthy, straight, white, cis-gendered, extroverted man who’s anti-intellectual and oh so very afraid of women and other minorities.’

    Also congratulations on the achievement of creating a derogatory term. Perhaps in one of your endless tirades about the effects of extroverts you have forgotten how introverts tend to deal with these situations. Introspection goes a long way, mr. TheWulf.

    @yeoung;

    Hmm it seems a fair number of people took offense to Joe Musashi. I may have seen too little of his comments to understand why, or perhaps I don’t take offense towards his (some might say overly) rational, if a bit callous, rhetoric.

    Perhaps I am ignorant of his past comment crime sprees, I shall refrain from passing judgement then. Cheers.

    @yeoung Basic rules and gudielines is that you should always feel free to bash on Erthazus and TheWulf.

    We also have Salarta bingo, where you have to drink a shot every time he mentions the words “boycott” or “Toriyama” or goes on and on (and on) about how the Tomb Raider reboot is the worst thing ever and kills kittens or something.

    R.E. Shatner

    Finally…

    Although ironically, I haven’t found his output on the representation subject that bad.

    The pseudo intellectual bully character was far more damaging to the community overall though. I may add

    It isn’t pleasant seeing people like Manu / etc… get picked apart and led down the ‘garden path’ when we all know it was part of a twisted game.

    Most were fair game too, he was obviously using the forum to exercise some warped kind of control one can only presume he was lacking in real life.

    Mild psychopathic tendencies of which you could only get away with on a forum hidden behind avatars…

    Ultimately, if you behave like that IRL, people tend to give you an incredibly wide berth. They would think you were an absolute arsehole.

    So, a bit late coming, but at least something’s happened.

    Only question now is… What is Poly going to do with his spare time?! :P without your virtual nemesis, you will need a new hobby!

    #20 4 months ago
  21. polygem

    @monkey: i already made a Hobby request thread. I smelled that this was coming. :-D

    I could exactly tell you the diagnose that has driven joe. A ban is great for the community but also good news for his own health. Really meaning this in a good, caring way now.

  22. yeoung

    @Gheritt White: Duly noted, love me some bingo shots, well met.

    @Monkeygourmet: Wait…… there’s a forum?

    #22 4 months ago
  23. monkeygourmet

    @Poly

    I think it’s safe to say based on his previous history, his online persona ain’t going nowhere! :)

    Far to much of an ego trip when you can have people dancing to the tune you are playing… (Again, a classic sign of control / abuse). At least his ego maniac tendencies refused to let him change his posting ‘style’. It was nice and easy to spot after the previous bans.

    The best you can hope for is some glimmer of realisation from him:

    “Shit, it wasn’t everyone else… I was actually being a complete dick…”

    That kind of change is probably unnecessary though, because, let’s face it, he would have never acted like that in real life.

    At least… I hope not…

    (Shudders at the thought)

    @10

    Hahaha, are you serious? If anyone deserves a ban for being a self righteous insulting little prick it’s that guy. Massive walls of texts berating everyone who doesn’t think like him (i allways imagine Hitler when i read his texts). He’s just as bad as Joe Musashi, if not worse. I’m seriously surprised you haven’t picked up on him yet.

    #24 4 months ago
  25. polygem

    @monkey. He wont realise his part in this. That’s just impossible…and he acts like this irl. Only message that i really wish he will get from this: stop taking it to the internet.
    But that’s it from me now. Not fair to dance all over this without him being on the party anymore.

    Shame, I frequently enjoyed Joe’s commentary. Insensitive & sarcastic but I agreed with him more often than not, particularly with this whole sexism ‘issue’ in games- I can understand why people are upset but I still perceive it more as entitlement than anything else.

    Most devs are still men, most publishers are still men, & often their target is mostly men so creating male protagonist is hardly sexist, just simpler if nothing else. I’ve no issue with woman becoming more involved in gaming, I just don’t think slander is the right way to go.

    I understood where you come from Joe Musashi, anyway, since a long time in the LBP community the characters have been referred as Sack People.
    Just for clarity :)

    @TheWulf

    With all due respect, it’s called “Sackboy” and has always been. It’s even called that in PlayStation All-stars Battle Royale. And in LittleBigPlanet.

    Unless your “thicky” rant was a troll that I fell for, in which case, congratulations.

    @Armitage Shanks Agreed. TheWulf is the VG24/7 equivalent of Katie Hopkins, but I do so love to watch the slow-motion car crash every time he comments.

    @Game Hunter

    Please provide links of The Wulf directly attacking another forum poster…?

    I’m out of the loop, but the only time i’ve seen the Wulf insulting anyone directly is here, with the ‘thicky’ thing.

    Have you any other examples? Or are you just talking about his monologues where he creates random groups of people who may or may not exist, then attacks them… It’s all very internalised from what I have seen, and generally leaves it up to other posters to decide wether or not they fall into those groups and take offence or not.

    Basically, what most people would call a rant. Egotism aside, he/she has never tried to directly influence or warp situations for there own gains. Big difference IMO…

    Personally i did prefer if Joe really made efforts to change his behavior while realising which were his faults, all the wrong tactics, and then improve as a person respecting everyone, while making his point of views, he sometimes had very interesting views, but the tone and treatment to others that didnt hold his views, were not fair and wrong, but probably that woulndt happen, never.

    I wonder which new name he will be using next, although his style will expose who he is eventually, because in the past it never did change, from shatner, to kerplunk, to joe.

    Hmm, I’ve been seeing the Joe guy trolling in some posts, it was annoying. And I don’t even participate in comments as much as I used to.

    I’m not bothered by thewulf, sometimes I disagree, sometimes agree, most times don’t read his enormous comments =P

    You all are mistaken:

    This site has been a joke for a long time especially after the (now) infamous “Deep Down doesn’t include female characters!!!111″ post. I avoid all these type of articles now (which unfortunately are spreading like a plague to other sites). Still, Dave Cook posts some good articles here and that’s why I occasionally visit.

    It could be worst. This site could be Kotuku or IGN.
