“I force vassals I don’t like to marry old inbred people” and other terrific Crusader Kings 2 reviews

Wednesday, 4th June 2014 05:15 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Have sex with your relatives. Catch nasty diseases. Assassinate your own children. There’s a good reason why Crusader Kings 2 is widely regarded as one of the most personally engrossing grand strategy games every produced.

If you’ve never played a grand strategy game, Crusader Kings 2 is a good place to start. Rather than give you an abstract concept like a nation to govern, it makes things personal – you’re trying to establish a dynastic line and rule the world. Worrying about whether your children are going to survive the STDs they’ve contracted, offing competing monarchies and exploiting religious figures is a lot more fun than just staring at a lot of graphs.

But don’t take my word for it – read these reviews.

I think my personal favourite is probably this one, though. Take a careful look.

These and plenty more can be found on Steam.

    I remember trying the game and being immediately overwhelmed by all the options and the confusing interface. Is it worth going back? Any proper tutorial out there? How big is the learning curve?

    @YoungZer0 I’ve heard YouTube guides are the best way to learn! I’m thinking of giving it a crack myself.

    Thanks! Guess I’ll have to find some time in my schedule for this one then. If I remember correctly it had a great Game of Thrones mod? Definitely gonna check that out.

    LOL, 1959 hours on record, that’s like playing for over 81 straight days without sleeping. Not nearly enough apparently.

    I wonder if you can put that on a resume and run for a political office.

    “In my last office I got crabs, killed the president, poisoned half the senate, fucked one of the senators wives, gave her crabs, took over NYC and forced the mayor to marry my daughter, who has crabs. Vote for me.”

    @YoungZer0 I remember having a link to a let’s play from the Something Awful forums that a friend gave me to learn how to play, it explains everything in a pretty easy way, will se if I can find it. The learning curve is way less harder than other grand strategy games, like brenna said, it’s a great start point to the genre.

    Tip: begin as one of the Ireland duchys in your first play, no one gives a shit about you, until you conquer the whole UK and france comes to destroy you.

    And don’t bother playing the Game of Thrones mod until you understand what is going on with the vanilla game, the mod adds more systems and is even more harder to stay alive.

    @YoungZer0 There you go! http://lparchive.org/Crusader-Kings-2/

    Just remember that this LP is from the base game, with expansions there are new systems, but they are pretty self explanatory from the in game info
