In a press release sent today, Nintendo announced that the number of sales is based on internal estimates for Japan, Europe and The Americas. The firm did not however specify if the numbers represent the games shipped to retailers or sold thorough to consumers.

Older Mario Kart titles have averaged more than 14 million units per title, according to the firm.

“Such positive early feedback for Mario Kart 8 reinforces the great gameplay experiences that Wii U currently offers,” said Nintendo of Europe president Satoru Shibata. “With Nintendo set to showcase its future releases at E3 next week, this is a great milestone going into the summer season.”

If you’re still on the fence about picking up a copy of the game, you can have a look at Dave’s review, he enjoyed his time with it.

That is impressive although it is likely shipped figures, with digital figures included. Selling software isn’t a problem. Though we would need those hardware numbers, to see the extent of the system selling status, that can wait until Wednesday and the June NPD thread.

For now this is good, Polygon had an article on this, which is eating some mighty fine crow.

How does ‘internal estimates’ equate to ‘early feedback’?

Is this from the same quote, or are there two separate quotes being referenced in the above article?

There’s no question it would sell well. BUT the question is how big a bump will it give the Wii U hardware sales? I can’t see more than a million worldwide, at most.

@3 Right now it those internal estimates suggest 24ish% of the Wii U customer base own the game.

while my first impression was: great looking game, plays great too but it´s just more of the same…i must say that this is certainly true :D but now, well over 14 hours into it, after having gold trophied all the races (still want to 3 star them) and after playing online for quite some time as well, i can say that they really made the game feel just right. it´s mk on a whole new level really.

the online is great and the time trials are a lot of fun as well. the game just keeps on giving and giving.

they pretty much nailed the mechanics and the amount of details they managed to put into it is just crazy. ultrapolished game and tons of fun.

i enjoyed sega all stars and some others of that series as well. it was the closest to a mk game i think. it´s a good game but this one really is in a different league. it really is. it runs and controlls supersmooth. the trackdesign, audio. they really wanted to make it right and yeah….they did (minus the merecedes benz horseshit).

this might sound a bit too excited but i just stopped playing 2 minutes ago. so my memories are kind of fresh :D

so, to sum it up: sales are deserved imo.

Also it didnt specify the numbers behind the game/console bundle, which will be important to know as well.

But overall, good news and very happy with this.
