Sunset Overdrive’s respawn animations make dying look fun

Xbox One exclusive Sunset Overdrive is a bright, colourful shooter that looks to inject a dash of joy into every little thing it does, even dying which, as we’re sure you’ll agree, is a traditionally morbid affair.

It follows this rather mad Sunset Overdrive gameplay video from Insomniac Games, showing off tons of parkous style traversal and action that makes us all nostalgic for Jet Set Radio.

You can watch Sunset Overdrive’s mad respawns in action around the 2:45 mark of Eurogamer’s latest video preview, which you can watch right here:

What do you think? Still reckon dying in games is a bloody chore? Let us know below.

Besides animation, I don’t think there’s much ‘next gen’ about the respawn in the game.

That said, I think it’s smart to turn a negative into a positive in this way. Dying sucks, but at least you get the reward of a cool respawn anim. No doubt the player will see them all before long but it’s takes some of the player-punishment out of the event.

I think Burnout 3 really did the negative-to-positive thing the best. Turning a crash into something you can exploit and turn to your advantage.

Perhaps we’ll see the respawn thing examined further by other games now that the gauntlet has been thrown by Sunset Overdrive.

Looks like something to rival the many Crash Bandicoot death animations, something that never really caught on.
