LEGO Minifigures Online has a new trailer available, showing off the pirate area of the MMORPG. Below, you see Lego folks running around Volcano Island and battling the ghost pirate Dreadleg. Players can also head to Treasure Island and battle the monster Crikey the Kraken. You can sign up for the beta through here.

This reminds me of the kind of unrestrained insanity we saw a lot of in the early ’00s, especially with kids games. You know, stuff like Ratchet & Clank. It also reminds me of TT Games’ LEGO efforts, but with actual online multiplayer, and that can’t be a bad thing.

This tickles so many of the right buttons in my head. I think that most importantly it just doesn’t take itself so seriously and expect you to do the same. I’ve come to expect that games will do that, now, whereas I prefer having a game that I can laugh at, occasionally. Where I’m actually laughing at it because it has good humour, rather than laughing at it because it’s created solely to appeal to a habitual demographic that wants the same thing over and over. The MMO space needs fresh ideas.

The homogeneity and mundanity affecting the video games medium at the moment is a cancer, no doubt. And there are many possible ways to treat the symptoms until we can cure the underlying problem. (The underlying problem being that most people are habitual creatures who sleepwalk their way through life without ever questioning anything other than that which they perceive as a threat to their habitual lifestyle. And usually that’s more insulting than questioning.) This looks like one of the ways we might be able to treat the symptoms and help show people that novelty is good. Maybe.

    I can hope.
