Assassin’s Creed: Unity was teased in 2010′s Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, according to Ubisoft writer Jeffrey Yohalem. According to a tweet from Yohalem, the ending sequence of Brotherhood contained the Phrygian Cap, a symbol of the French Revolution. The symbols shown also hinted at Assassin’s Creed 3, as the Eye of Providence was also shown. Assassin’s Creed: Unity was announced last week after images of the title were leaked. Assassin’s Creed: Unity is slated for a holiday 2014 release on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Thanks, Eurogamer.

Not sure about hints, but people have been putting forward the French revolution for ages simply because its a well known period in history and it would make an interesting setting for the game. I remember when AC4 was revealed to be set in and around the US again and people were wondering how they picked that over the French revolution.
