Sony has sold over 900,000 PS4 cameras to date, resulting in stock shortage

Thursday, 20th March 2014 11:15 GMT By Dave Cook

Sony has revealed that it underestimated demand of its PlayStation 4 camera peripheral, with over 900,000 units sold since the console launched in November.

Gamespot reports that during a GDC session, senior staff developer support engineer at Sony Chris Norden said that as a result of unexpected demand the camera is now, “severely supply constrained.”

Of course; it’s probable that the figure has been bolstered by cameras already bundled with PS4 hardware, but Norden revealed that the device actually has a console attach rate of 15%.

He asked fans to “please be patient,” while Sony attempts to fulfil demand.

Do you own the PS Camera? If so, what do you think?

The camera is very good. Given the choice to buy it separately from the system was a plus. I guess in their case it’s great that they made a tiny stock of cameras rather than just putting a shot ton of cameras out and just have them sitting on shelves for eternity

    Demand for the PS4 camera?

But how? Why? It surprising that PS4 is still hasn’t met demand but the camera? I was expecting a bomba.

Does it have something to do with twitch streaming? The Playroom? Just Dance 2014? Surely it can’t be for that alone?

    900k… Wow, that’s a surprise tbh.

@Legendaryboss Twitch, is part of it. A couple people I know have been trying to get one for streaming. The only person I know with an Eye says his wife and kids enjoy play room but I rarely see anyone on it when I check their status.

Over 6 million PS4′s sold. 900,000 PS4 cameras sold. Not impressed by those numbers, so I’ll pass on the camera. Now roll out some more games. That’ll make me happy.

As someone with no interest in the ‘benefits’ of a camera attached to something, I’d say that attach rate is higher than I would expect.

But it also shows that a significant chunk of consumers aren’t interested in having a camera attached to their console. In light of such figures, making a camera mandatory and having it raise the cost-of-entry to your platform isn’t the smartest of moves.

Well, Move sold about 20 million pieces, that is about 25% attach rate to PS3.
