PS4 update will allow users to dim the DualShock 4′s lightbar

Thursday, 20th March 2014 23:04 GMT By Brenna Hillier

An upcoming PlayStation 4 update will allow users to dim the DualShock 4 controller’s lightbar, according to a Twitter exchange between SCE Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida and Geoff Keighley. The PS4′s lightbar allows for quick differentiation between controllers, and is used in some games to provide atmosphere or even as an alternative to the HUD, as in Thief.

Personally, I really like the lightbar, when used as part of the game environment instead of just player designation. It’s surprising and perhaps saddening how many people are unaware that this is even a thing.

There are a couple of games in particular that use it really well. DCUO colours it differently for whichever power set your character is using, while Warframe has it flicker crazy alarming colours when you’re close to death. Probably the best use of all that I’ve personally experienced so far is Thief, where it’s dim when you’re in shadow and then flares up bright when you’re in a lit up area.

I’d love to see more of this, and on that basis I’ve never supported the petitions to turn it off or down, nor will I use this option. I find it quite sad that so many players have such a strong negative knee-jerk reaction when someone tries something different, almost always without realising the potential of what the thing can actually do, and that applies to pretty much everything in gaming these days, not just lightbars.

@Revolting I agree with you on this completely.

The lightbar has really added to the experience, allowing me to focus on the task at hand.

p.s. Wasn’t the lightbar originally meant to support motion gaming? If so, why turn off something that will be incorporated into more games over time?

@ #1 It’s not a Knee-jerk reaction to be pissed off at the dirty great big fucking reflection in the middle of my screen. People want the option to turn it off for valid reasons.
