Guild Wars 2: Battle for Lion’s Arch finale cinematic shows Scarlet’s defeat

Tuesday, 18th March 2014 14:56 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Guild Wars 2: Battle for Lion’s Arch was the culmination of the latest addition to MMO’s Living World, and saw Scarlet Briar uniting factions and assembling armies to assault Lion’s Arch. Thanks to the heroes of Tyria, Scarlet was defeated and her ultimate goal was finally revealed. It all started back in February and the finale occurred last week. You can watch the cinematic below, and you can expect the update titled ‘Aftermath’ to launch later today.

The living story stuff has been absolutely awful, the writing’s hit rock bottom and kept on digging. That’s the one thing that’s successfully kept me away from GW2. No matter how much I might love the characters, or the classes, or the jumping puzzles, or the exploration…

The writing, the bloody awful, irredeemably horrible, inexcusably terrible writing keeps me away. It’s getting to the point where it’s almost as bad as WoW, now. Not quite, but almost. I mean, the number of plot holes with the living story plot itself is staggering, it’s like they’ve had it written by a small group on the fly with no one checking it or bouncing obvious errors off of them. But then, that’s how the end of the game felt, too, with all of the Trahearne stuff that was equally as riddled with plot holes and problems.

Can’t they please fire their writers, get new ones, and salvage it? I want to like GW2, but the writing is so, so painfully bad. And the writing is the one thing you can’t get wrong, in my opinion, because it ruins everything about the experience if you do.

Also, I’ll note that once again it’s a mastermind sylvari who’s behind everything. The heroes are sylvari! The villains are sylvari! Someone at ArenaNet has a serious sylvari fetish — so let’s just forget about those other races, eh? I hate that, too. No one else really has a look in because one of the writers (and clearly one of the bad writers, from the problems that the Living Story has) has such a sylvari boner.

It just irritates me because GW2 could have been so good. :C

But no, it’s all a stage for someone to satisfy their sylvari fetish with bad fanfic writing. Auggghhh. The asura are almost as bad, too, but not quite. Jeff Grubb pushes for them to be superheroic so, so badly. So if we ever lose the sylvari-fetishist, it’s going to be a gnome fetishist next.

Instead of having a circle of unbiased, good writers…

This is the kind of nonsense that plagues some videogames and why they’re not taken seriously. We really need to up the ante with the writing and stop inviting in the wrong kind of unstable personalities, the kind of people who’re going to try to turn a game into their own thing, for their own selfish ends.
