That Dragon, Cancer: Joel Green passes away aged five

Friday, 14th March 2014 00:42 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Joel Green, the young son of That Dragon, Cancer developer Amy and Ryan Green, has passed away. Ryan announced his son’s passing on the That Dragon, Cancer website as well as in a very moving blog post on Joel’s website. Our thoughts and sympathy are with the Greens, whose courage and generosity in sharing their experiences of their son’s illness cannot be overstated. That Dragon, Cancer is a timed Ouya exclusive expected later this year.

Thanks, GamePolitics.

Death is always incredibly awful. It’s just a necessity of how broken we are — we keep breeding, we have limited resources, and some people have to die. It completely sucks and I despise that element of our nature.

I really dislike hearing about anyone dying — this is why I dislike reading the news, because even statistics get me. They were all a strong, emotional attachment to someone, right? And this is intrinsic to our nature, we bond emotionally with a small group of people, even the extroverts, and part of our identity involves them. We’re pack animals. The pack matters.

And when someone dies, it’s just soul-wrenching, because an important part of you — a foil to your current existence — has been removed. You are always less for it. It is always a loss.

And I am sorry for their loss.

Hopefully, one day, in some post-scarcity society we’ll be able to overcome death. I’d like to live in a time where death has no teeth. I’m a dreamer, and that’s the sort of thing I like to dream about. No one truly deserves disability, suffering, or death.

I hope they can find some comfort in fighting cancer, which seems like the best thing for them to do, now.
