Here’s the full statement handed to GameFront by PopCap GM John Vechey:

“The changes we made today at PopCap were painful and we’re sorry to lose some of our friends and colleagues. But it was also necessary in order to stay on course with our future plans for mobile games, live services, and new IP.

“PopCap is a studio that made its name building great games that the world can fall in love with, and that’s what we’ll continue to do.”

EA would not confirm a specific number of layoffs, but an undisclosed source told GF that the number of staffer let go is around the 30 mark.

Oh, EA. You always do this. I’m still sore over Origin and how you so callously gutted them.

I mean, you buy PopCap, you ignore PopCap’s incredibly lucrative PC audience for which PopCap has been developing award-winning titles for years, and you take the worst possible kind of gamble on microtransaction-riddled, soulless free-to-play mobile games and console exclusives.

Didn’t work out for you, did it? I’d be interested in hearing what EA thinks went wrong. I’m sure it’ll be the usual deranged, delusional shite. :I
