The game’s closed alpha is currently live for those who purchased the Founder’s Pack.

To prepare, Michaels told Massively the team is adding new features on a weekly schedule. Those currently participating in the alpha can expect the addition of groups, the ability to see friends online, their location on the map, and they have staked a claim. Players can also expect permissions so friends can help with building on said claims

“We expected really phenomenal things, but some of the stuff that’s being created blows us away. It’s just fantastic,” added director of development Dave Georgeson.

Landmark will eventually contribute to EverQuest Next, which isn’t expected till at least 2015 on PC and PlayStation 4, the later of which will contain Twitch, Facebook, and Twitter support.

Next really is looking so, so lovely. And if they keep to their plan to not have levels, at all, I may jump on board with this. I think this is the one that’ll decide whether I have any faith left in MMOs or not, this is the one I’ve been waiting for.

Levels are an MMO cancer that need to go the way of the dodo, vertical progression is there only to addict people and keep them playing, rather than making a game fun. Telling me that you’re not going to have a vertical level grind is telling me, in effect, that you’re confident that your game is fun enough that you won’t even need that. Vertical grinds are what you put in there to addict people when your game isn’t fun, sort of like how Wildstar is unfortunately doing things (quite disappointed with how that turned out).
