Dark Souls 2 reviews – all the scores

Tuesday, 11th March 2014 04:54 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Dark Souls 2 reviews are now live, with From Software’s dark RPG sequel hitting very high notes across the board.

Dark Souls isn’t to everybody’s taste, but those who enjoy its punishing formula have clasped the sequel to their bosoms; just look at all those nines.

In addition to the reviews below Dave has kept a journal of his entire Dark Souls 2 playthrough, because he’s nuts.  He’s put in crazy-hours and is ready to tell all.

All scores out of ten except where otherwise noted; feel free to add your own in the comments.

Dark Souls 2 hits PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on March 11 in North America and March 13 in Europe and beyond. The PC version is due at the end of April.

The Souls series popularity kinda confuses me at times. Not that I don’t enjoy it (cause I do), it just seems so against the grain of everything that’s critically and commercially popular in games nowadays.

I think you answered your own question. There’s a significant crowd out there that is saying “I’m tired of your shit shooters…”

Dark Souls series (and Demon’s Souls) definitely doesn’t touch COD, or Halo, or Skyrim, or GTA levels of popularity. It’s “just” gotten critical acclaim and very respectable sales, but nothing close to being the smash hit those other franchises are. It is no longer a niche genre I suppose, thanks to it’s own success, since it has quite a large following now, but it will never be truly mainstream, surely. I have spoken with loads of people, who have either played it, and liked it, but couldn’t finish and ultimately decided to resign themselves never to play it again, or the same just…they never liked getting their asses kicked and having to repeat, over and over.

A great game, and a great series though for an action RPG fan, who enjoys a challange, building a character, and strategizing their way through the world, and that is all before you touch the game’s unique multiplayer. One of the biggest releases this year for me, hands down. The Undisputed King for me is The Witcher 3, but DS2 would be, em, The Queen, I guess? A brother, first in line to the throne until the ruler produces children? LOL.

I am buying this game twice, for PS3 (because I couldn’t wait), and for PC (because it will almost surely be the best version of the game). That is how much I love this franchise.
