Titanfall: Xbox One resolution confirmed to be 792p, is ‘likely’ to be increased according to Respawn

Titanfall comes out tomorrow, and other than fan claims, we’ve not heard the official word on the game’s resolution on Xbox One. That has now changed thanks to an interview with Respawn’s lead engineer Richard Baker.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Baker confirmed that 792p is the same resolution as the beta and that they’re experimenting with several options to try an increase it, without compromising the frame-rate.

“We’ve been experimenting with making it higher and lower. One of the big tricks is how much ESRAM we’re going to use, so we’re thinking of not using hardware MSAA and instead using FXAA to make it so we don’t have to have this larger render target.

“The target is either 1080p non-anti-aliased or 900p with FXAA. We’re trying to optimise… we don’t want to give up anything for higher res. So far we’re not 100 per cent happy with any of the options, we’re still working on it. For day one it’s not going to change. We’re still looking at it for post-day one. We’re likely to increase resolution after we ship,” he said.

FXAA and MSAA are both techniques of removing aliasing from the surfaces and edges in games, each come with its pros and cons.

    If I was them I’d put the effort into improving the frame rate (single digits in a particular game mode according to Giant Bomb) and screen tearing (prevalent according to the CG review) rather than improving the resolution.

    Seems a bit of a clusterfuck on the XB1 really.

    So it does run at 720p and gets an extra 72p from the cloud?

    Wonder what happends to the PC version and the cloud power from Microsoft, does it get extra p aswell?

    Wow a full 792p with FXAA!?!?

    The game is good looking but it isnt anything special visually, my 2 year old rig smashed through this 1080p @ 60fps with everything maxed including AA, and my rig is hardly a nasa computer. the xbox is so shit.

    Lucky resolution and AA don’t matter now though, they would have if the xbox could hit them appropriately but it can’t, I chalked it up to lazy devs/ the magic optimisation not being unlocked yet but nah, its the xbox.

    Luckily all the casual gamer fifa bro’s don’t really read into this type of stuff and that is there target audience, some of them actually believe the PS4 and X1 will one day output games in 4K, bless them.

    Other than that though its a fun game, I had a blast playing the beta.

    Gameplay is REALLY all that matters, but its massively enjoyable to see all the X1 fanboys who thought it would “takeover” gaming get this type of news thrown into their faces whenever a game comes out and an exclusive title at that…LOL… Im just easily amused when it comes to this stuff I guess.
