Asheron's Call and Asheron's Call 2 content development ceasing, servers will remain open

Turbine has announced it will cease development on Asheron's Call after 15 years.

According to a post on the MMO's official forums, the next update will be the last content release for the game. It will include a PVP Coliseum, the restoration of value to massive mana stones, an Enlightenment system, and general fixes.

Turbine said it will keep the servers running, will maintain the game with patches when needed, and will not be merging servers.

Asheron's Call and Asheron's Call 2 accounts in the future will be converted to free and the server and client software will also be released so players can run their own private servers. The developer will also worth with the community so it can create its own content and build game worlds.

"Unfortunately, setting up and running an AC server is not a user friendly experience," wrote the game's producer. "Enthusiasts would need some knowledge of running an SQL server, setting up the network, using our tools to configure the SQL server, installing the Asheron’s Call server with our complicated tools, and distributing the client.

"Our intent is to help these players build a community so these processes can be created and distributed to people interested in running an Asheron’s Call game. If that works out we can look into releasing tools and data files that would allow players to modify game data and create alternate content for their own Asheron’s Call games."
