Xbox One’s March system update will contain support for 5.1 optical sound, but those hoping for notifications of a friend coming online will have to wait for another update.

The March system update will finally support output for Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound (thanks, CVG). This means that gaming headsets will finally have a full surround signal over an optical audio cable.

The console launched without Dolby Digital support and the only option available was DTS Digital Surround output over HDMI. At the time, director of product planning Albert Penello said the option would not be available at launch due to a software scheduling issue.

The update will also update the Xbox One party system and friends list, but the familiar pop up which occurs when an Xbox Live friend has come online will be added with the next update, according to Marc Whitten.

Twitch users will receive broadcasting toasts from friends though, just not normal XBL users.

Microsoft plans to released the Xbox One March update before Titanfall lands on March 11.

Hopefully the friends online notification is for those that you tagged on your favorites list. Since your friends list has been expanded to 1,000, I would hate receiving notifications if 200 of them were online. Hell, more than 5 is enough to drive you crazy. Na mean?

would be kind of crazy to show a notification of everyone coming online with 1000 “friends” since mostly you don’t know these people and don’t care if they just came online

Nooooooooooo! What about all of those individuals who want to be spammed about notifications of their massive amount of friends coming online at almost the same time?

    Oh well, their loss.

@all I am sure they will implement a way to select for which groups of friend you want to have notification or if you want to disable it anyways like they did now with the new friends app where they separated those groups.
