Spelunky world record now stands at over $3 million

This weekend, one highly skilled and very lucky Spelunky player established a new world record for the hardcore platformer.

The new record of $3,105,850 was set by Bananasaurus Rex, a name already known to the Spelunky fan community for having completed the first solo eggplant run.

Destructoid reports the 7.5 hour run took place over the weekend, and kicked off with a couple of lucky finds - a plasma cannon and jetpack in the opening acts.

You can see the run in its entirety through the Twitch embed below.

For those not familiar with the Spelunky phenomenon, the side-scrolling rogue-like platformer was developed by Derek Yu in Game Maker. A critical and commercial success, it's now available on PC, PS3, Vita and Xbox 360, and has inspired a populous Let's Play fanbase. Daily challenges introduced with the Vita release have also helped grow its popularity.
