Xbox eReader app could be in development at Microsoft – report

Microsoft could be hiring for a new Xbox-branded reading app that supports news, comics, books and magazines.

This Microsoft job advert calls for a software development engineer at the firm’s Music, video and reading department, housed within its Devices & Studios arm, which also includes Xbox development.

The position descriptor reads, “you will be on the team building a groundbreaking interactive reading app on Windows, which incorporates books, magazines, and comics.”

Sources close to The Verge have allegedly stated that Microsoft is planning to build a new app to replace its current reader software, which displays PDFs and other file types on Windows 8.

Interestingly the job is within the same team responsible for the Xbox Music and Xbox Video apps, currently found on Xbox 360 and Xbox One. While it’s not clear if the new reader app will appear on Xbox consoles, it is entirely a possibility at this point.

It follows Microsoft’s $300 million investment in Nook creator Barnes & Noble, which has yet to bear fruit on Xbox devices, or its own Windows apps.

The question is readers; would you want a comic or book-reader on your Xbox One? Let us know below.
