Hyperdimension Neptunia dev announces Makai Ichiban Kan, whatever that is

Hyperdimension Neptunia developer Compile Hearts has announced – well, something, with details to come in this week’s issue of Dengeki.

According to Gematsu, the developer’s latest teaser website heralds the arrival of something called Makai Ichiban Kan.

“In the Makai Mansion lives creators who possess sharp talent. Now they’re making their move to become hell’s best,” the site reads, which is unhelpfully vague.

Gematsu calls it a “new brand”, in quotation marks, so it’s not clear if we’re looking at a new game, transmedia franchise or perhaps even a spin-off publishing label like Galagagos RPG.

The site guesses the tease may point to a Vita RPG from Idea Factory; we don’t know very much about the project except that Disgaea 4 director Masahiro Yamamoto is working on it.

Expect more news when Dengeki drops on Tuesday. In the meantime, here’s an uncommunicative teaser trailer:

  1. Dragon

Another Vita (exclusive?) JRPG made by Disgaea 4 director. And a new IP?

Actually, the trailer is communicative of a few small details.

Makai Mansion sets the stage as being, obviously, a mansion. Makai is essentially a world of spirits, and the “hell’s best” furthers that; basically meaning, it’s a haunted house trope. The video itself shows jack-o-lantern and Frankenstein style characters, so now we know that aside from being a paranormal themed thing, it’s also heavily Halloween-inspired.

My work is done here. Captain Obvious, awaaaaaaaaaaay!
