PS Vita slim launches in UK Feb 7, priced £180

Thursday, 30th January 2014 10:03 GMT By Matt Martin

Sony’s new PlayStation Vita slim model unveiled by UK product manager Ben Law. Older Vita model will be replaced as stock runs dry.

The model is available to preorder from today in the UK. Sony released the PS Vita 2000 in Japan last year.

It is 20 percent thinner than the original model and 15 percent lighter. More significantly, the OLED screen has been replaced with a new LCD screen and 1GB of built-in memory.

    Thought it would be cheaper, considering you can pick up the current Vita for the same price new

    An original Vita can be bought for a lot less than that… so this Slim version is more expensive with a worse screen? Nice one Sony.

    So it’s like the Iphone 5C, it’s just cheap for Sony to manufacture not for the consumer to buy!

    Well played! -.- *facepalm*

    There’s a 1 gig built-in memory too you know.

    @fihar What a revolution!

    You can easily get the original model for less than this in tonnes of places, so I can’t imagine why you would even bother

    @CyberMarco
    Hey, I’m just saying. It’s not a complete downgrade as you guys have been suggesting.

  8. Beta

    Right.. Well I hope mine never breaks as I don’t want a worse screen for more money.

    #8 8 months ago
  9. Ireland Michael

    @Beta You will still be able to buy the standard units. This is more of an optional model than a replacement, much like the 3DS.

    @Ireland Michael Ah I saw “Older Vita model be replaced as stock runs dry.”

    Took that to mean standard was being phased out. Glad that’s not the case :)

    So is the Vita 2000 replacing the Vita 1000 or not?

    #11 8 months ago
  12. Skywalker333

    @CyberMarco, @Beta.

    Yes the 2000 model is replacing the 1000. The older one will be in stores as long as the stock lasts and then you’ll only be able to find the 2000 model.

  13. CyberMarco

    @Skywalker333 Feared so!

  14. Dragon

    @CyberMarco,
    Do you know its cheaper, or just guessing?
    Try that when you have definite proof. It has lots of improvements over 1000 model.
    Besides, anyone moaning should just give it a rest.
    Bought a Vita already? None of your concern then.
    Not bought a Vita? Why do you care then? 2000 model is selling much much better than 1000 model, and that is all that matters.

    @Skywalker333 “The older one will be in stores as long as the stock lasts and then you’ll only be able to find the 2000 model.”

    No, this isn’t the case at all. The 1000 will continue to be made, but only when they sell through their stock of it. You’ll still be able to buy it in stores and (especially) online.

    This a cost saving measure, nothing more.

    @Dragon “It has lots of improvements over 1000 model.”

    It has a paltry amount of in build memory. That’s about the “only” improvement this has. Anyone wanting to use PS Plus on the system or buy games digitally on it (most people) will find this useless.

    Having a critical opinion of something is not “moaning”.

    #15 8 months ago
  16. Dragon

    @Ireland Michael,
    Its lighter and smaller without decreasing screen size, and that matters a lot for handhelds.
    And sorry, what critical opinion? Let me reiterate-
    Bought a Vita already? None of your concern then.
    Not bought a Vita? Why do you care then? 2000 model is selling much much better than 1000 model, and that is all that matters.

    Many people moaning never owned a Vita, which makes them just silly to bark now. If you own it, why does it matter? Again, its better than 1000 because it sells better, and that is all that matters. Its pathetic how people moan without knowing facts.
    And fact is 2000 is better like by consumers who matter than internet crybabies, who just don’t.

    #16 8 months ago
  17. Dragon

    That said, I would buy a 1000 model if my Vita breaks, but I wont moan since the new model has drastically improved Vita sales.
    Quite funny how some moaners here don’t even have a Vita and yet, still moan.

    #17 8 months ago
  18. thegrimmling

    You forgot the improved battery life on the Vita 2000 due to the screen switch.

    Battery life is important for handhelds.

    #18 8 months ago
  19. CyberMarco

    @Dragon You should stick your head out of Sony’s butt once in a while. Yes I KNOW that the Vita 2000 is cheaper, you can clearly see that they went full plastic on the handled etc, the LCD screen is cheaper than the OLED one to manufacture, also changed the proprietary usb port.

    There is a difference in moaning and being critical as Michael said too. Vita 2000 is/was (at least for me) to be an improvement compared to the Vita 1000, not a downgrade. The 1gb internal storage is a joke.

    “This a cost saving measure, nothing more.” Oh it’s more! It’s cheaper for them to manufacture and more expensive to us to purchase.

    I still want to buy a Vita that is, but let’s hope that the 1000 model wont be pulled from the market.

    where did you find that info that they will continue to make it? any link/source? cause my information was different and i’m asking whether i gotogo call the regional sony pr.

    Good to have an option. (slimmer/lighter and standard USB, or OLED?)

    Now, where is the west release for the Vita TV?

  22. Selderane

    Lots of butthurt around here for a “failed” handheld. If you didn’t want one because it was too expensive, Sony didn’t what it had to and dropped the price. If you want the OLED screen go get a 1000 series already.

    Oh. You want the better tech and the lower cost? Give it a few years and when Sony’s next handheld comes out you’ll get a 1000 series Vita for a steal.

    Everyone wins!

    Right. The tech chaps have pulled the cache down, so there shouldn’t be too much time between me pressing the button on this comment and it appearing.

    Okay maybe i should be a little positive, the box art looks cooler and better than the original and the fact that they managed to insert the PS4 remote play really showcases what the importance will be for PS Vita going forward from Sony and i predicted this.

    It sells better, which will make a Vita owner happy, and Sony happy. Facepalms of others don’t matter.

    @Dragon What do numbers have to do with LCD and plastic being cheaper than OLED and metal parts?

    It’s nice seeing it sell, no problem with that. Maybe you missed my point.

    Regarding the name calling, you are a bit fixated with numbers and shit like that.

    #33 8 months ago
  34. Ireland Michael

    My bad regarding the phasing out of the older units. It seems that’s exactly what they do. I read the phrasing completely wrongly. Whoops.

    @Dragon Can you prove it *isn’t* cheaper? Because it’s pretty clear to everyone that it’s being manufactured with less expensive part.

    Vita is my favourite system right now. Why are you so angry and defensive about critique?

    #34 8 months ago
  35. Dragon

    @CyberMarco,
    “Regarding the name calling, you are a bit fixated with numbers and shit like that.”
    And you are needlessly fixated on hating companies for making money and consumerism .
    See? Works both ways. At least I care about things that matter in real life, not on hypothetical concept of consumerism and holier than thou, which involves hating companies and then doing same thing yourself just to save some of your own money.

    @IM,
    If anything, you get more defensive about Vita than anyone here, so don’t give me that.
    There are more worthwhile additions to this new model than you think, and that is a sales proven fact.
    Btw, about UK, afaik, any official price is undercut by retail offerings, aren’t they? Cost of new model cannot be proven or dis proven either way, hence I said this debate is moot. And in the end, it doesn’t matter.

    #35 8 months ago
  36. CyberMarco

    @Dragon Cool story bro, whatever.

    “And you are needlessly fixated on hating companies for making money and consumerism.”

    Oh really, I did show all that by saying that Sony is dropping the ball by selling an inferior-quality product but not on a reduced price, right…

    “At least I care about things that matter in real life, not on hypothetical concept of consumerism and holier than thou, which involves hating companies and then doing same thing yourself just to save some of your own money.”

    What? Are you high or something? If you DO care about things that matter in real life you should spend less time searching for “proof and numbers”.

    Yeah, I really hate Sony with passion, spot on!

    Maybe I wasn’t clear enough. All I was trying to say is that the new Vita 2000 is IMO a lesser product compared to the Vita 1000, and one major point is the lack of OLED screen. Also it’s cheaper to buy a Vita 1000.

    As it seems I must haste if I want to buy the OLED one…

    I don’t get why certain people are so obsessed by sales and numbers, do you buy Sony stocks or something? Anything else makes no sense.

    @Dragon Defensive? I support changing things if it brings in more people.

    I support *all* format.

    The fact that you’re getting antagonistic at us having an opinion is the only defensiveness in this thread.

    I forgot about the mini/micro USB connection on the 2000 series. But they are also removing the internal 1080p upscaller for connecting to external TVs too.

    @Ireland Michael,
    “The fact that you’re getting antagonistic at us having an opinion is the only defensiveness in this thread.”
    The irony. Remember the Ps Plus thread? Also see here what CM said. Then tell me exactly where I get “antagonistic”. I am still waiting for your definite proof about new model being cheaper.
    Fact remains, new model sells better, and none of you tried to pass your first views as objective ones. And that is sell better is all that matters. Does anyone here dispute that?
    “Can you prove it *isn’t* cheaper?”
    Putting words in my mouth? Did I ever say that it was cheaper? Nope. I said its impossible to say things conclusively.

    @CM,
    “If you DO care about things that matter in real life you should spend less time searching for “proof and numbers”.”
    Better than making false accusations on various threads with no proof whatsoever, and then flaming others when they point out that.

    “Maybe I wasn’t clear enough. All I was trying to say is that the new Vita 2000 is IMO a lesser product compared to the Vita 1000, and one major point is the lack of OLED screen.”
    That is better. I have no problems with your own opinion. Sorry if my comments came off as that. I just pointed out that was not a proven fact. Nothing else.

    Have a nice day :)

    #42 8 months ago
  43. thegrimmling

    @CyberMarco Oh, you need the connections to connect to an external monitor (like a dev kit) but the upscaling for a higher resolution was handled internally on a PS Vita 1000. The 2000 series they removed it.

    #43 8 months ago
  44. Ireland Michael

    @thegrimmling I didn’t even know that was a thing. You need to jailbreak it to access it though, right?

    @Dragon “Remember the Ps Plus thread?”

    No.

    “Then tell me exactly where I get “antagonistic”.”

    Your entire attitude in this thread has essentially been “Everyone who doesn’t have the same opinion as me should shut up.”

    “I am still waiting for your definite proof about new model being cheaper.”

    LCD is cheaper than OLED to produce. This is a simply fact.

    “Fact remains, new model sells better, and none of you tried to pass your first views as objective ones.”

    Your opinion is no less subjective than ours. You are setting the criteria by which you judge something as better (sales) as we are ours (build quality).

    #44 8 months ago
  45. Dragon

    @Ireland Michael,
    “LCD is cheaper than OLED to produce. This is a simply fact.”
    Another deflection. Tell me do have an official source that 2000 model is cheaper to produce than 1000 or not? Dont dance around the topic.

    “Your entire attitude in this thread has essentially been “Everyone who doesn’t have the same opinion as me should shut up.”
    Please. Your assumptions are always like that. Tell me where I said that. Dont assume. I am saying from the start that I want some source confirming 2000 is cheaper than 1000. I asked that to CM, but apparently that was enough to get myself flamed.
    How about answering the question, eh?

    “Your opinion is no less subjective than ours. You are setting the criteria by which you judge something as better (sales) as we are ours (build quality).”
    No one has said here that 1000 is better than 2000 (another of your needless assumption). I just pointed out how people were passing 2000 as significantly cheaper to produce than 1000. And yet, no response, just flaming.
    And sales are objective. Consumers like 2000 model better than 1000 model.
