Black Tusk: Xbox One game was concept never intended for release, says Spencer

Black Tusk Studios has just been outed as the new Gears of War developer, following Microsoft’s acquisition of the IP from Epic Games. However, it has also surfaced that the team’s original IP – first shown at E3 last year – was a concept never intended for release.

You can read up on the Gears of War IP acquisition through the link. Former Epic member Rod Fergusson is now helming the series at Black Tusk.

Regarding Black Tusk’s E3 reveal, Spencer told GI.biz, “I wouldn’t say things have been shelved. Obviously, this will become a big focus of the studio and something that will be critical to them driving forward. There’s not really something that was on the road map that all of a sudden goes away.”

Additionally, he told Polygon, “The thing we showed at E3 last year, it was something that was done in Unreal and more of a concept piece.”

Then in a statement to Videogamer, Microsoft added, “Being able to continue to bring Gears of War fans new games and entertainment experiences from their favourite franchise is a unique opportunity that we just couldn’t pass up. Black Tusk is very excited and humbled to play a role in this important Microsoft franchise going forward. We have nothing further to announce on other things Black Tusk is working on at the moment.”

So then, the question is; what was the original E3 concept, why was it made and will it ever see the light of day again?

What do you think?

Why even showcase it for the Xbox One?!

Everyone was expecting a new IP (Shooter) and now they will get Gears Of War 3 instead (Shooter). Im just wondering why not both? Why couldnt Microdaft leave the development for Epic?

I’m sure they still have that IP. They just fell into this deal here. It’s nothing too bad.

How the heck did MS get the Gears IP?

Did Epic really sell it?.. I’d have thought it’d be a licence to print money, it must have cost MS a pretty penny.
