SOE’s unannounced MMO “dedicated” to Star Wars Galaxies players, says Smedley

Saturday, 25th January 2014 17:29 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Sony Online Entertainment boss John Smedley’s extensive Reddit AMAA yielded many answers and many teases, one of which pertained to the unannounced MMO the firm has had in the works for quite some time.

In the AMAA, when pressed for details on the MMO, Smedley would only confirm it was a “completely new IP,” and that “the data is on the interwebs.. someone just has to find it.” So if you feel like doing a bit of sleuthing, by all means go for it.

He also said the game is “dedicated” to Star wars Galaxies players.

“Once we launch it… you can come home now,” he said. When pressed for what exactly he meant by that he replied: “It’s called ‘go figure it out for yourself’. ”

A bit cryptic, but interesting nonetheless as Smedley also said if there was one game shutdown by the firm he could relaunch it would be SWG and he would do “everything differently” with it.

Star Wars Galaxies signed off after eight years of operation back in December 2011 after SOE’s contract with Lucasarts at the time expired.

This *could* be exciting. If they did relaunch SWG, gave it a graphical make over and it was all pre-NGE(even CU) – EA can kiss SWTOR goodbye!

The planet is crying out for a good big IP sandbox MMO.

SOE are the ones who ruined SWG.

Its not Star Wars related as EA has exclusive rights to Star Wars.

So yeah it won’t be a SW MMO, anyway even if they were relaunching SWG, I’m just not sure it would take off more than any other MMO (sandbox or not) already on the market. The market is already too crowded, so any new MMO needs to be not only good but great as soon as it’s out (which could be considered as a miracle after all these releases we’ve been through). It’s like GW2 trying to revive the tri faction PVP cherished by all of those former AoC players and well I’m not sure it really paid off as much as the hype pre-launch was leading us to believe.

@2 ha I was going to say was pre or post dumping on SWG.

Let’s make something really clear in this cryptic soup by John Smedley.

I am ready to sub 15$ a month for a even a SWG with a lifting as long as and ONLY IF IT IS PRE-NGE . Better can also be implemented, by this mean, looks at game mechanics in general for adventure/action/RPG, They evolved since 2000. So beside re-texturing the whole game + adding meshes and mesh density in a good portion of the whole game + since episode I, II, III came out too taht could enforce/reinforce/change some of the quest trees and their own mechanics too!.

Anything else such a re-hashing SWG post-NGE and I may come in if it is sub free and very unlikely to spend anything, you heard right, not a dime. Just jump in for all time sake for month or so, have a good spoof and then bye bye.

In other words, SWG game mechanics Pre-NGE were one of the greatest MMO EVER PLAYED (as in EVER in capital), while more/better must be added to be adapted to 2014~15. get this in your cranium @ SOE orwell sorry but die like the rest.

They don’t own the rights to everything. Disney is so focused on the new Star Wars IP, that SOE could make a MMO based around the new movies but using the SWG sandbox approach.

@4 SWG is already around on where you can play free with other fans of the game pre-nge.

@2 – Actually, it was LucasArts who dumped on SWG. Together with SOE they both decided on NGE to take on WoW. However, their cloak and dagger approach back fired and it all ended in tears with another text book PR disaster for SOE.

Just seen that the Clone Wars is shutting down on March 31 and others

“BURBANK & REDWOOD CITY, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) and Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: EA) today announced a new multi-year exclusive licensing agreement to develop and publish globally new games based on Star Wars characters and storylines.”

  9. GrimRita

#8 just to shut you up -

Under the agreement, EA will develop and publish new Star Wars titles for a core gaming audience, spanning all interactive platforms and the most popular game genres, while Disney will retain certain rights to develop new titles within the mobile, social, tablet and online game categories.

Read in to it what you will. But ‘online game’ categories could mean MMO’s.

    “Could”, being the keyword here.

Since we are playing the read into game.

    “completely new IP”

Star War sandbox MMO is not a completely new IP, now is it?

  11. TheWulf

I don’t understand what the obsession with Star Wars is, it’s fairly boring fare as far as sci-fi settings go. Wouldn’t just a sci-fi sandbox of their own creation be good enough? And it would allow them to be more creative, too, rather than sticking with the exceedingly grey and dull Star Wars aesthetic.

If we have to have an IP, then how about a Firefly sandbox MMO, eh?

    #11 11 months ago
  12. Ireland Michael

    Because Firefly is boring.

    #12 11 months ago
  13. GrimRita

Looks like Lucasfilm renewed Star Wars Galaxies trademark in December as well.

@11 Star Wars defined a generation and made movie history, essentially created the kind of special effects we see today. Watch a Flash Gordon TV show and watch Star Wars – you will see how Sci-fi was seen before the arrival of Star Wars.

  14. KineticCalvaria

@12, how dare you?! FIREFLY IS TEH SHIIT!1

    #14 11 months ago
  15. Ireland Michael

@14 Its characters are good. As a world, its boring.

How do you make an MMO out of a universe where space travel only exists at conservative speeds? Set it on a single planet? What would the races, backstory, and locations be about? There’s almost nothing in the Firefly universe to actually build a world out of.

If anything, a multiplayer shooter would make a lot more sense.

    #15 11 months ago
  16. KineticCalvaria

@15, my thoughts exactly regarding an MMO from Firefly. One tv series worth of lore and 1 film is hardly enough to build a game out of but as a tv series Firefly was awesome. Least I thought so anyway.

@Grim Rita Yes I know there is an unofficial server run by SWG fans but let’s be honest it’s not that big of a thing otherwise we would see several articles/news about it in the mainstream gaming media.

This article is absolutely not saying the new SOE sandbox MMO will be SW related, it will just use some SWG core gameplay mechanics to please a particular population of gamers. If a new MMO is in the plan on LucasArts’ side, it won’t see the light of the day before at least 3 years and beyond. Firstly because they’re currently in a deal with EA and BW with SWTOR, it’s pretty easy to understand they don’t want to release two SW MMO that are competing for more or less the same crowd of gamers (after all SWTOR came out 8 years after SWG and way after its demise, it will be the same thing with SWTOR maybe with a shorter time frame because of the new upcoming trilogy of movies). Secondly, simply because they’re covered in the SW IP presence in video games with their new deal with EA and all the other unannouced mobile/social/F2P games which will undoubtly come out around the release of the new movies.

So yeah it will be supposedly a sci-fi sandbox MMO who will, again supposedly, please all the SWG veterans and sandbox fans and it certainly won’t come out before 2 or 3 years, knowing SOE is already deep in the development of the next Everquest. And that’s fine in my book.

People keep going on about EA and Star Wars – but they do not have the exclusive rights to publish on non gaming machines. The PC is a ‘non gaming machine’, hence why Star Wars Attack Squadron is coming and EA have sweet FA to do with it.

Sure, there’s no guarantee that SWG is in fact about to return but there is something going on.

Many Star Wars fans love the original movies and SWG gave them that chance to be a part of it so don’t count it out yet. As for SWTOR, it should be worried because they have demonstrated to Disney that they can’t do online games (WAR another failure) and given SOEs expertise(using the word loosely) and their huge database of players, it makes sense to bring another party to the table who can deliver the Star Wars experience many fans are crying for.

    #18 11 months ago
  19. Dendroball

@18 If SWTOR is a failure then I guess DCUO or dare I say SWG are also failures. And I’m not even talking about Vanguard:SoH, The Matrix Online, Bullet Run and Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures. You see it’s all about perspective.

  20. Gekidami

^ Wasnt SWTOR like, the most expensive MMO ever made, if not one of the most expensive games all round? I’m assuming those other games you mentioned actually made money or at least came close to how much they cost to make. Pretty sure we can consider TOR a failure because it never got enough attention to make back its budget.

Also it was just a horrible MMO.

    #20 11 months ago
  21. Dendroball

@20 Sure you can find it’s an horrible MMO but does that make it objectively a failure financially speaking ? I can hardly believe so when frequent content updates are made, and then there is this link, do whatever you want with it but it exists :

    #21 11 months ago
  22. Phoenixblight

It really doesn’t matter. It will not be a SW title as the article says “a completely new IP” A Star Wars MMO is not a completely new IP its actually far from it.

It will be most likely a scifi sand box in the same vein as SWG was.

All MMO´s have been failures to date. I´m not going back for that. SWTOR had a nice story, everything else was shit. Well the rails space combat was kinda fun for a while. Give me a Jedi knight 2 or Chivalry MMO, or a highly modified Arkahm combat system to make me come back to play MMOs.

If other People like it, good for you, just don´t expect other players to come to play them. Outside of the free test month if ever.

    and @12 Shut up

  24. GrimRita

@19 in terms of subscribers SWTOR fell flat on it’s face. Record exodus in record time seen in any MMO(something like 2m at launch, 500k after 8 months).

It failed because it was EA’s last chance to take on WoW, hence why they invested so much time and money in to it but when players found out it was just WoW in a Star Wars skin, they abandoned it.

SWG only failed due to LucasArts/SOE attempts to turn it into WoW. But despite that, it was still a paid to play MMO for 8 years without going free to play.

Gamers see MMOs as a failure probably because it doesn’t reach the same dizzy numbers as WoW – which is wrong. If it makes money and has a loyal base of fans, then its a success, just a smaller one.

The MMO genre has become stale so quickly with everyone trying to copy the WoW format. Hell, even Wildstar is heading the same generic path. Raids, tanks, wazones, arenas – just yawn.

Even if this isn’t a new Star Wars MMO, it should be and Disney would be stupid not to make it happen.

    #24 11 months ago
  25. natesobol

Yea, they should bring back SWG. Bring back features that were most popular from all eras of the game, and just make everyone one big happy family. I will not play if it isn’t Star Wars.

    #25 11 months ago
  26. GrimRita

Actually, I wonder if SOE are going to publish The Repopulation? Everyone says it’s almost like SWG, many features from it etc etc and, its a new IP.

Reading into Smeds info, ‘the information is already out there, you just need to find it’ – TheRepop is already out there and in development.

Haaaa Star Warsss Haaaa, just kidding but none the less and truly yes, The dude G.Lucas adapted a great story in a far from dieing setting and loose, diversified, deep and focus enough to make it endless.

Hell Fuck Yeah, that is a GREAT IDEA, bring us a good, deep, lenghly FIREFLY MMO that is NOT targeting 8~12 and it will probably kill everything around and a good and potential contender to Wow success perhaps.

Ok, taking into account all the clues… the next MMO is Homeworld!
